Tuesday: Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse - Period 3 - Class 2

Today when the students entered the danger shop they would find that the room had been transformed into a shooting range. Like the first class there was a horde of zombies standing frozen on one side of the room, except this time this zombies looked... well for lack of a better term they looked like rednecks. It might be all the PBR cans littered about the place that gave that impression.

Also lying out was a variety of firearms and targets had been posted at the end of the shooting range with pictures of zombies on them.

“Good morning,” Columbus said cheerfully. “Hopefully you’ve been keep up with your cardio for the last week. Make sure you turn in your training logs. For those that have? You get a twinkie. For those who don’t... well you get a twinkie.”

How could Columbus deny anyone from golden sponge cake goodness?

“Today we’re going to talk about rule number two to surviving the zombie apocalypse.”

Columbus hit a button on the remote and once again giant block letters appeared behind him.

“The double tap. The premise is simple: If you can’t outrun a zombie, you have to kill it. For zombies the weakest point is always their head. A good shot to the head will take anyone down... almost When you’ve taken down a zombie with a baseball bat, gunshot or another weapon... always take a second hit. Now is not the time to worry about how much ammo you’ve used. If the difference between using another shell, being eaten or becoming a flesh eating zombie? Take the second shot.”

“Now let’s talk about using a gun.”

What followed was a brief discourse on how to use the multiple firearms that were available and how to use them safely. Columbus was very careful to point the advantages of various firearms and how they could be used to their best advantage.

“Now, if guns are not something you feel comfortable with,” Columbus said as he gestured to the pile of sports and gardening equipment that were set up on the other side of the guns, “You have the option of using something to bash a zombie’s head in. In this particular case the double tap rule should still apply. I would also only recommend this method if you have a severe aversion to guns however I believe this is more of a method of last resort. A gun will allow you to keep space between you and your attackers. If you miss with a gun? You can still run. If you miss with a bat? You better be running very fast.”

Yes. It all came back to Cardio.

“We’re going to take a few minutes for you all to practice with the weapons a bit before we let the zombies loose. And if weapons aren't your thing? Feel free to just run. All right? Let’s go.”

Shooting was definitely something Dolf hadn't done before. He eyed Columbus warily as he spoke, but did stretch obediently.

Running was always his big sekrit fall-back skill.

Of course Seifer had filled out the log. Paper work was his thing.

Okay, it wasn't, but he had still filled out the log. Lots of running and training for him.

Bod had been with Kate most of the weekend so he hadn't really had the chance to exercise but he'd been conscientious about before that trip so he thought that counted.

While he stretched, he tried to convince himself that using a gun in this environment wasn't a bad thing and wasn't going to turn him into something he didn't want to be.

Butters did fill out his training log; he was always good about both training and homework, to help avoid being grounded, which meant that he got a Twinkie and he decided it would make an excellent snack before shootin' up some zombies.

"Hey, there, Mr. Twinkie, what'd'ya know? Are ya gonna get eaten? Yes, I do think so!"

This act of unwrapping the Twinkie for consumption before limbering up required a song, apparently.

He'd been serious about the cardio log thing? Tara had kind of forgotten all about it.

It was okay, though. She didn't really like Twinkies. So she just stretched, listened, and contemplated exactly how badly guns freaked her out.

Hank had, in fact, filled out his training log. None of the times spent running had broken the five-minute mark, though.

Twinkie time!!!!!!

Seifer chose shooting. And if the shells had a little extra oomph behind them, and possibly a bit of fire... well, he wasn't admitting it.

The exploding, smoking heads might give him away though.

It took Bod a good while but he did eventually pick up a gun. He went for something smaller and simple and even then, he concentrated on running and dodging the zombies before anything. He was good at that. He excelled at using the environment to his advantage.

During this exercise, he tried to run the zombies around into dizzy circles and even ran a few into each other before one got too close and he had to use the gun. It was loud and his ears started to ring but the zombie was down and it had worked.

Still, he didn't want to repeat that if possible.

Tara considered the guns for a long moment before deciding she'd only use a gun if she absolutely had to, and nothing in the Danger Shop counted as 'absolutely have to.'

But when the zombies attacked, she missed with her second baseball-bat tap, went down, had her mind go blank of any useful magic, and almost got virtually eaten before scrambling away.

On the to-do list: More defensive magic that she could do while scared out of her mind.

Butters did not usually have the best of luck with guns. He did alright during practice with a harmless target. To be honest, he liked to think that he could be a good shot, but then he got all sorts of nervous and when it came down to actually firing....

"Ah!" Butters let out a nervous shout as a zombie lumbered toward him, closed his eyes as he pulled the trigger, and roundly managed to shoot the zombie in the dick (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-k-rcOPz9vM)*

Unfortunately, shooting zombies in those sensitive parts didn't exactly stop them like it did normal men. And so after taking out several zombies' crotches, and managing to get a few lucky head shots, Butters realized he wasn't very good at this, dropped the gun with a scream, and took the running away option instead.

Natalie actually went for a combination. No, she didn't try to actually shoot while she was running, but running and then turning to shoot so that the zombies stayed away seemed to work for her.

It even turned out she was kind of an okay shot, actually. But it was beyond gross, and she eventually abandoned shooting in favour of running some more.

Hank had seen guns fired thousands of times, and had even fired them several times himself. That didn't improve his aim at all, though. He could, in fact, hit the broad side of a barn, but only because that wasn't very hard to do. Besides, these were zombies. Against zombies, there was only one weapon of choice, and it made aim mostly irrelevant: the pump-action shotgun.

Hank fired until he was out of shells, killing two zombies and taking chunks out of a few more. He wasted a few moments pumping the empty gun trying to get it to fire rounds it didn't have, and then turned and ran screaming.

Seifer totally had a question, one that he should have asked last week.

"Can I bring my own weapon to class?"

Given how Tara dies, giving her a gun felt like a bad joke. Blunt weapons and magic, for the win!

You know, I'd never thought about it consciously until I saw this, but I suspect that's part of the reason I've always given Kennedy a slightly inexplicable distrust of guns? That makes sense, I guess . . .

It would make sense! And then guns just aren't a very Buffyverse thing in general. Not much point to them when they don't work on the main bad guys.

Re: OOC

Except the occasional random bazooka . . .

AND THAT IS ALL VERY LOGICAL. Though knowing myself I don't think I had any semi-conscious rationale besides "I LIKE IRONY, OKAY."
