Creative Arts, Monday, Period 2

Steve was standing at the front of the classroom today as the students arrived. He was dressed somewhat more casually than he usually was for teaching, in a blue t-shirt that already had paint smudged on it and an old pair of equally paint-smudged jeans. "Good morning, everyone," Steve said as soon as the clock ticked over to ten o'clock. If someone was late, that was not his problem. "I'm Steve Rogers, and I'm your teacher for Creative Arts this term. It's pretty straightforward, no hidden motives here, just, art. Making, not talking about. Don't expect a lot of lectures from this class. Do expect a lot of doing things, and more importantly, doing things that can ruin your clothes. We'll be using paint, ink, clay, glue, plaster...and other things. I've provided smocks," at this, he gestured to where they were hung along the wall, "but I strongly encourage you to wear something you don't mind getting messed up. Obviously that will vary from person to person, but just to give you an idea, normally to teach I'd wear a nice pair of slacks and a button-down shirt, but this is what I wear when I'm painting, so it's what I'll be wearing for this class.

"Now, that said," he said, his voice taking on a warning tone as he crossed his arms, "What's not allowed is making a mess on purpose. Later in the semester we might do a few projects where this rule will be suspended, but anyone caught deliberately damaging school property or, say, slinging paint or other art supplies at a fellow student will have to stay after class to clean anything they've messed up by hand whether they have a quicker way or not, and will receive detention. Got it? Good. Everyone should have a basket of supplies at their desk." In each basket were paints, containers to put the paints and some water in, and pads of paper.

"Today," Steve explained, "we're going to finger paint--yes, really, it's actually surprisingly fun--and introduce ourselves. Everyone tell the rest of the class your name, where you're from, what kind of art you like, and another interesting fact about yourself. As I said before, my name is Steve Rogers--that's Mr. Rogers to you all--and I'm from New York City. I like illustrations, and I once punched Hitler. Now it's someone else's turn." After a momentary pause, he added, "Oh, and Mr. Stark, please see me after class."

"What about haunting people in the shower?" asked Butters, who would have continued to laugh except for the fact that that idea made him shudder too much to allow that. Ghosts in the shower was creepy.

"I didn't really get around to asking them," Bod said, shrugging. "The ghouls I know, they couldn't leave the graveyard so I doubt the shower would be an option. Other things might haunt people in showers but not the ghouls I know."

"I guess that makes sense," Butters mused. "People who go into graveyards a lot probably expect to be haunted, so they've got a pretty willin' audience. I don't know lots about ghouls myself, but I was a vampire once. I didn't like it too much, so I think I'll stick with bein' just a normal human boy."

"Vampires aren't all bad," Bod said because he had to. "Some of them are but I was raised by one and he never once tried to hurt me. He's my guardian still. Vampires can be many things but they're not always evil and bloodthirsty."

"I'd hope not," said Butters. "Blood tastes like clamato juice, which means it tastes real bad. Real, real bad! You'd have to be crazy to be able to live on that stuff. I'd much rather just drink Kool-Aid or Hi-C or something. Ooh, or Sunny D!"

"Clamato juice?" Bod asked, confident he'd never had that. "That's a mixture of tomato and...?"

He couldn't quite place the other half of that drink.

"Clams." Butters' face twisted in disgust. In fact, it looked like he was turning a little green just talking about it. "Blech!"

"Tomatoes and clams don't go together," Bod said which meant he agreed with Butters there. "Tomato juice isn't awful but clams should just stay in food form."

Butters hands were resting on his poor stomach; he was grateful that Bod could understand, but he was just getting some bad memories now. "B-boy, I just can't even look at plain old tomato juice anymore, I just can't! Not without feelin' all sick to my tummy."

"So, maybe don't think about it?" Bod suggested sympathetically. "Think about chocolate milk or vanilla milkshakes or something. Stop thinking about anything else."

Butters' brightened. One nice thing about Butters' mind was that it was very, very easily shifted. "Or how 'bout bleu cheese chipolte burgers from Bennigan's?"

"That's something I've never had," Bod admitted, shaking his head. "It doesn't sound too bad but I've never been to a Bennigans. I guess I should fix that, shouldn't I?"

"Oh, boy!" said Butters, brightening even more at the chance to share with someone the magic that was Bennigan's. "You sure should! It's only the best restaurant ever! They'll even sing to you on your birthday. Happy Happy Birthday, from Bennigan's to youuuuu! Gee, I mean, Fandom Island's great an' all, but I think the one thing it's got wrong is that there's no Bennigan's. Outback Steakhouse is okay; you gotta love a bloomin' onion, but, let's face it, it's no Bennigan's."

Bod smiled at the excitement that Butters seemed to have for the restaurant. It did make him want to find that place and give it a try.

"I'm from England and they didn't have many Bennigan's during my travels," he shared, nodding. "I didn't have a lot of money to spend either and since I've been here, I've been trying diner food. Perhaps now that the island has settled, a trip to the mainland is in order for Bennigan's food."

"H-hey, maybe we could find a bunch of people who wanna go and go together!" chirped Butters. "I mean, it seems like the island might be done doin' all that movin' around and stuff, too, which means we won't be stuck somewhere else that doesn't have a Bennigan's, neither. So many places without Bennigan's. It's so sad."

"I wouldn't say no to something like that." Bod was always up for trying new things and that included new restaurants. "I've been trying to do as much exploration of various surroundings as I can. And I like food."

"As long as it's not clamato juice!" noted Butters with a laugh. "Well, great! I'll have to see about gettin' some people together and we can go. I know Stan would wanna, and maybe some other people, too!"

"That sounds quite enjoyable to me," Bod said, nodding and feeling a little lighter right now than he had since Kate had left. "I'm up on the fifth floor. Bod Owens which...I said during my introduction."

He laughed and shook his head at himself.

"An' I'm Butters Stotch!" Butters offered, in case Bod missed his introduction. "I'm in room 216! I'll let you know when I've got a good crew rounded up together and we can show you the best restaurant in the whole wide world!"

"That sounds great," Bod agreed with another few nods. "I'll look forward to that."
