Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Once people got through their introductions and initial brain breaking, some of them would surely want to sit down. Luckily, there were plenty of tables and chairs set up across the lawn, some in the shade, some out in the open, some close to the buffet, and some in as much of a shadowy corner as one could get in an outdoor space with no actual walls. It was all part of the Fandom experience, really.

"I have not spoken to any yet," Raven admitted. "But from what I have seen, interesting is a good word to describe them." Especially considering the girl with the dragons and the one in the medieval gown.

"Going by that alone, they should fit right in." Fandom did have itself a rather eclectic collection of students, after all.

"What about you?" Raven asked. "Have you spoken to any of the new arrivals yet?"

Alice shook her head. "Not yet. I've been keeping to myself, mostly."

"As have I," Raven said. "I am not very fond of crowds. They can be quite overwhelming, particularly since the emotions are so strong. The new arrivals are anxious about coming to Fandom, and some are sad about leaving their homes."

"I see bits and pieces of their futures -- or I would be if I weren't trying to avoid it," Alice explained. "It helps that I haven't interacted with any of them yet, so I don't have any reason to pick up on their futures."

"You can see the future?" Raven said, her interest piqued. She'd only spoken to Alice once before, some time ago, and she hadn't mentioned that ability then. It might have been handy to know that before she'd been possessed by her father.

"I can," Alice said with a nod. "Works differently with different types of people, though."

"It is unchangeable, what you see?" Raven asked curiously. "Or can it be seen as a warning and the outcome made different?"

Alice was quiet for a moment, trying to figure out how best to put it. "Most of the time, there's a certain element of unchangeable to it," she said. "When I see just one thing, because the course has been set... then it's not changeable. But if the person's mind hasn't been made up yet, if they're still trying to decide what to do, then I'll see different flashes of each possible outcome."

Sometimes it didn't even make sense to her and it was in her damn head.

"That must be a difficult burden to live with," Raven murmured. She didn't want to imagine what it would be like for her to feel another's pain and not be able to relieve it for them.

"It can be," Alice said with a nod. "I've... learned to cope with it over the years, more or less. Some times are easier than others."

"Can you shield yourself from such visions?" Raven asked. "I have learned to shield myself from emotions since arriving in Fandom. Professor Skywalker is very skilled in such instructions."

Because of course she had to fangirl Anakin. Hush.

"I've... never really tried," Alice said. "I think because my visions aren't constantly there. If they were, I'd have tried finding some way to shield from them. Because if they were constant, I can't imagine what I'd do."

"My gifts are always there," Raven said thoughtfully. "I must consciously focus on shielding myself so I do not feel the emotions or pain of others. When I first arrived here I did not know how to shield myself, and I was constantly affected by the strong emotions of those around me. Professor Skywalker was invaluable in helping me not lose myself in them."

Alice frowned thoughtfully. "Maybe I should speak to him, then," she said. "It would be interesting to hear his opinion, if nothing else."

"His office hours will likely be on Tuesdays or Thursdays, depending on when his class is," Raven said. "Have you taken Ethics? It is one of my favorite courses I have taken here at Fandom."

Of course it was.
