So there it was. A large chunk of rock sitting in the middle of a laboratory classroom, waiting to be researched. Jane wasn’t entirely sure it wanted to be researched, though, with all the elusiveness and mystery it was giving off, but, then again, geology was hardly her area of scientific expertise, and she had a feeling it wasn’t quite Miss Granger’s forte either.

Thankfully, that was why they had their brilliant and inquisitive students to help, yes?

Goodness, she hoped so! Either way, a ~~handwavey~~ message had been sent out to the student body, encouraging anyone who was interested to come on in and help them out today.

“Hello, students,” she gave them a bit of an uncertain smile. “Thank you all for coming and giving us a hand with this most mysterious piece of rock. It’s so good to see so many of you eager to help, but Miss Granger and myself must ask you to take the utmost care. Clearly, we are uncertain what we are dealing with, so we must be careful.”

"Yes, please. I wish we had more information to give you," said Hermione, and don't think that wasn't bothering her. Of course, she'd also decided that if there was some strange mysterious rock that no one knew anything about, she was not going to be touching it unless it was absolutely necessary. At least without gloves. She knew that was probably just paranoia. "If there is anything you can tell us about it, don't hesitate to speak up."

“We’ve got gloves, microscopes, goggles, you name it,” Jane offered, “and also plenty of books for reference. Let’s use our resources and try to figure out what we can. Consider everything; even if you find something that’s just minutely interesting or different or strange, it could be useful.”

"Now, if anyone has any questions, we'll answer them as best we can," Hermione went on. "But let's get started and see what we can find, shall we?"

"Yo." It was always good not to be looked at like she was a unicorn or something.

Unless she actually was a unicorn that one time...

Never mind that now!

"Any idea what we've got?" he asked, maybe a little too excited.

"Well, my theory that the island was molting is probably wrong." Which, you know, was good to know. "My other theory was an alien egg."

Tony looked from her, over at the stone. "I could get on board with the egg theory."

"Scully said it probably didn't fall from the sky, so it might not be space alien. But . . . yeah. I'm hoping it doesn't hatch and try to eat us all."

"It could have fallen ages ago and taken this long to hatch," Tony replied thoughtfully. It would be another picture for his wall of aliens!

"Ooo, point. Maybe it's part of what's been making this island so abnormal all this time."

"Always a possibility." Oh, Fandom. You made people special. "So, this is just a small part of it?"

If it was an egg hatching, what would happen to the island?

"Or it's, like, an artifact that radiates weirdness, buried under the island for long enough that its weirdness has seeped into all the plants and animals and the very dirt itself."

Which . . . didn't make her that much less likely to want to touch it, really. Oh the joys of being sixteen.

Really, people should be glad none of them smuggled it out under their shirts for further study.

"That would explain why the deer are blue. But then, wouldn't we start to manifest physical changes?"

A beat.

"Being ponies doesn't count."

"Not if it works by way of evolution," Claudia pointed out. "Even mutations within a single person usually take awhile to manifest fully."

"Hopefully it won't be a sudden burst with this..."

"Well, it is exposed, now. If we're going on the radiation theory, the ground itself might have acted as an insulator." Claudia shrugged. "Or it has nothing to do with the island being weird at all, and in a few days will hatch into an adorable, friendly baby dragon." A pause. "Or maybe a hoard of gremlins."

"No gremlins!" Ahem. "I mean, let's just stick to the proveable facts for now."

"Point," Claudia said. "Observation number one: it's freaking weird."

"The color is..." Very hard to describe. "...what's the density?"

"We need the volume and mass first, for that one. Do we have any really big beakers?"

Tony shot her a look that clearly read 'Duh' before snagging a beaker for them to use. Science trumped manners, it seemed. "Can you cut off a small piece for other tests?"

"One step at a time, dude. Let's observe what we can with the thing intact, first."

"Okay, what do you recommend?"

"Well, it's squishy," Claudia noted as she lifted the rock into the beaker to check how much water it displaced. "We can see how much plasticity it has. Test how it reacts to heat or light energy. Do we have an x-ray machine at all?"

That was pretty high-tech for a school classroom, but it was worth a shot.

"Not... here." Tony was so good at this secret lab thing. "But I can get access to one if they let us take a sample."

And name it George.

"Well, a sample isn't going to let us see if there's, like, an alien hatchling inside, but cool." She tilted her head at him. "You work at the clinic or something?"

"No," Tony replied, entering something into his phone. "But I'm pretty sure I could, ah, get access to labs back home."

Yes. That would work perfectly.

"That's cool," Claudia said. "But I'm not sure we want this thing leaving the island. Not unless it actually already comes from your world."
