Science Classroom; Tuesday [ 08/02 ].

So there it was. A large chunk of rock sitting in the middle of a laboratory classroom, waiting to be researched. Jane wasn’t entirely sure it wanted to be researched, though, with all the elusiveness and mystery it was giving off, but, then again, geology was hardly her area of scientific expertise, and she had a feeling it wasn’t quite Miss Granger’s forte either.

Thankfully, that was why they had their brilliant and inquisitive students to help, yes?

Goodness, she hoped so! Either way, a handwavey message had been sent out to the student body, encouraging anyone who was interested to come on in and help them out today.

“Hello, students,” she gave them a bit of an uncertain smile. “Thank you all for coming and giving us a hand with this most mysterious piece of rock. It’s so good to see so many of you eager to help, but Miss Granger and myself must ask you to take the utmost care. Clearly, we are uncertain what we are dealing with, so we must be careful.”

"Yes, please. I wish we had more information to give you," said Hermione, and don't think that wasn't bothering her. Of course, she'd also decided that if there was some strange mysterious rock that no one knew anything about, she was not going to be touching it unless it was absolutely necessary. At least without gloves. She knew that was probably just paranoia. "If there is anything you can tell us about it, don't hesitate to speak up."

“We’ve got gloves, microscopes, goggles, you name it,” Jane offered, “and also plenty of books for reference. Let’s use our resources and try to figure out what we can. Consider everything; even if you find something that’s just minutely interesting or different or strange, it could be useful.”

"Now, if anyone has any questions, we'll answer them as best we can," Hermione went on. "But let's get started and see what we can find, shall we?"

Topher spotted Claudia. The whole thing with girls who did science was a cliche, yes, but still very appealling.

Claudia smiled. "Hey man. Dissect any fun mechanical spiders, lately?"

You spent long enough in the sciences -- or anything else dubbed "nerdy" -- and you got used to socially awkward guys. "Yeah, me neither," Claudia said easily. "Which, on the one hand, yay not getting attacked by spiders!"

Sorry, Claudia. He'd never met a girl who was both smart and pretty before. At least, not one who was civilized, Sam.

"Yeah," he laughed. "It's cool the island, uh, gave us something else to tinker around with, though."

"I think it likes to keep us entertained," Claudia said. "Or it's actively trying to kill us. I'm never really sure which."

Topher blushed, grinned and did an awkward sort of flailing thing with his hands.

"Yeaaahh," he laughed, sounding dorkier by the second. "But hey, entertained. And not dead! So..."

"You weren't here for the time the island sucked some of us into alternate dimensions filled with mutated monster people trying to kill us, were you?" Claudia guessed. Look, that sort of thing really stuck with a girl.

Yeah, okay, that one got a bit of a withering look. "Yeah, it was totally cool when they attacked us with fireballs and meat hooks."

Oh Topher, so young, so innocent to the horrors Fandom had to offer.

Topher blinked. Nope, that still sounded cool.

"Oh," he said awkwardly. "Right."

He was just going to go ahead and pretend that that didn't sound like scary fun.

It was probably best that he did. Claudia liked to think that the world was full of reasonable human beings.

Oh Claudia, so young, so innocent. . . .

"But, yeah, it's been, like, a year since that happened, and we totally fixed the problem. So this'll probably be cool."

"Oh, whew," Topher said, feigning relief. "Yeah, that's good."

Because attacks were BAD, Topher. Christ.

"So, what happened? Specifically." He leaned forward in interest, showing how fascinating this really was to him.

"One minute I was walking out to work on my trebuchet and the next I was waking up in an abandoned underwater cafe being attacked by weird zombie drug addicts." Claudia shrugged. "I didn't get all the details, but apparently there's this massive machinery under the island that powers the way it moves around through time and space, and parts of it went missing."

Excuse Topher for just a sec, Claudia. He was having a nerdgasm.

"Whoa," he breathed. "That's awesome. I mean, sucks about the zombie drug addicts, but still. The entire cafe was underwater?"

Yes, focus on that part.

"The entire city was. If it wasn't for the drug addicts, the occasional leaks, or the fact that we didn't know how to get out, it would have been pretty neat."

Well, in Topher's book it was pretty neat all the same, but sure, Claudia. Fear the drug addicts and the leaks and the lack of exits.

Topher didn't really have much of an opinion on this subject, but he did kind of want to impress her somehow.

"Yep," he pretended to agree. "Unless you're, like, testing some major pharmeceutical. Then it's okay."
