Science Classroom; Tuesday [ 08/02 ].

So there it was. A large chunk of rock sitting in the middle of a laboratory classroom, waiting to be researched. Jane wasn’t entirely sure it wanted to be researched, though, with all the elusiveness and mystery it was giving off, but, then again, geology was hardly her area of scientific expertise, and she had a feeling it wasn’t quite Miss Granger’s forte either.

Thankfully, that was why they had their brilliant and inquisitive students to help, yes?

Goodness, she hoped so! Either way, a ~~handwavey~~ message had been sent out to the student body, encouraging anyone who was interested to come on in and help them out today.

“Hello, students,” she gave them a bit of an uncertain smile. “Thank you all for coming and giving us a hand with this most mysterious piece of rock. It’s so good to see so many of you eager to help, but Miss Granger and myself must ask you to take the utmost care. Clearly, we are uncertain what we are dealing with, so we must be careful.”

"Yes, please. I wish we had more information to give you," said Hermione, and don't think that wasn't bothering her. Of course, she'd also decided that if there was some strange mysterious rock that no one knew anything about, she was not going to be touching it unless it was absolutely necessary. At least without gloves. She knew that was probably just paranoia. "If there is anything you can tell us about it, don't hesitate to speak up."

“We’ve got gloves, microscopes, goggles, you name it,” Jane offered, “and also plenty of books for reference. Let’s use our resources and try to figure out what we can. Consider everything; even if you find something that’s just minutely interesting or different or strange, it could be useful.”

"Now, if anyone has any questions, we'll answer them as best we can," Hermione went on. "But let's get started and see what we can find, shall we?"

Topher made a big show of looking over both his shoulders.

"Nooooooo."

Sorry, Tony. You had asked for that one.

"..." Damn it, Topher. "Well, good. I'm sure they only want real experts on this."

DAMN IT, TONY.

"...Shouldn't you be teaching some kind of anatomy class or something?!"

"I'm sure I could find you diagrams," Tony shot back. Because they were so mature.

This time Topher was whining.

"Stop it!"

He even stomped his foot.

"Never." Tony rolled his eyes. "Do they have any idea where the stone came from?"

That was so rude! Just for that, Topher was going to... to... to mail him explosives! Well, probably not.

...He'd save those for Ramona and Kate as revenge for the two bruises on his face.

"Probably it's just part of wherever the island landed this time," he said, shrugging. "Which may be another planet or something."

"That suddenly appeared in the middle of our campground?" Tony asked, peering over at the oddly coloured stone.

He couldn't even put his finger on why the colour seemed wrong.

"Yeah, no, you're right," he decided, and squinted at the thing. "Does it seem like a... kind of a wrong color to you?"

Brain twins!

"Gives me a headache," Tony replied with a frown. Though that could have been due to brain twins.

He shook his head, trying to clear the strangeness. "Okay, tests to run. Even if it's in a classroom."

HE DEMANDED ACCESS TO HIGH TECH LABS, DAMN IT.

"First we have to weigh it," Topher decided. "So that if it decays, we'll know it's something nuclear."

Already, he was snapping on a pair of gloves and crossing over to the scale.

Tony snorted, pulling a few tools out of his bag. "I haven't had a chance to look at a new ore in a few years. Maybe it could be used as a power source!"

Of crazy.

"Oooh, yeah," Topher agreed excitedly.

Then he poked it with one glove-clad finger and frowned. "It's... soft."

That's what she said!

Maybe to Topher!

"Soft?" Tony repeated, pushing things into a sort of order before selecting a small saw to hand over to Topher. "Just as long as its not radioactive... Samples."

He didn't get any red flags from the sensors that running, at least.

Totally to Topher! But that couldn't be much of a surprise, considering.

He obediently sawed off a few samples, then set one on the scale and recorded the results.

"Anything?" he asked, peering over at the sensors. He wanted to articulate the feeling he got from the thing, the feeling that something about it wasn't quite right, but whatever it was wasn't scientific fact, so he ignored it.

Tony frowned, hooking his phone up to one of them to make sure it was working properly. "Not much that makes any sense," he said before offering the phone over.

'Phone' might be underestimating the device, however. He made it to always have a decent computer on hand, after all.

Topher ran a quick scan with it himself, once again finding nothing useful. He shook his head, bemused.

"Guess your phone could use some upgrades, huh?" he couldn't help but snark.

"I could access the NSA's systems on that," Tony replied peevishly. "The stone isn't reading right."

Cat fiiiiight.

"Suuuure," Topher said. Giving Tony a condescending look, he held the stone up to one of his own scanners.

And... nothing.

"Huh?!"

Damnit.

"Something wrong?" Oh, boys.

"This -- this rock is broken!" Topher pronounced.

Yes, obviously.

He picked it up to inspect it, and found it squish slightly in his hand, molding into a slightly different shape. He stared.

"Is this clay?"

Computer whiz, yes. Neuro geek, yes. But a geologist, Topher was not.

"If it was clay, trust me, we'd be able to tell," Tony replied with a sigh, reaching to touch it without the gloves. He lived on the edge! "It's--almost metallic."

Oh, god, Tony, NOOOOOO! ~~Now you would need an expertly-photoshopped monster icon!~~

"A soft metal that..." He glanced at the scale. "Decays, apparently. What is it?!"

~~DAMN THOSE ICONS!~~

"Huh. It's warm." SERIOUSLY, THAT WASN'T GOOD.

"Should we try to... cool it?" he guessed. "Maybe it, like... likes this temperature?"
