Teambuilding for Dummies [Thursday, 4th Period]

Today, when Oz told his students to meet him at the Danger Shop, there wasn't a wild goose-chase over half the island to follow, instead he numbered them off as they entered.

"Hey, kids, good to see you all back again. Sadly, there's no explosives in today's class." Didn't they all feel sad about that? "But I do want us all to give a big warm round of applause to my new assistant Topher, please direct all future complaints about course content to him."

"Now much as I believe in the power of incendiary devices to bring people together, if you can't get the necessary permits, there's also the good old fashioned road-trip. Just a small group and the open road, it's a perfect recipe for bonding." Or causing the party to fracture under the pressure resulting psychotic breaks, murder and cannibalism, but, hey, Oz was an optimist. He hit a switch, revealing a wide prairie vista and several covered wagons, each with a number emblazoned on the side. "And we all know that there's no greater road-trip in American history than the Oregon Trail."

"I want to all to divide up into groups according to the number you got at the start of class, you all have different resources, and I want you to discuss in your group how you might use those resources, and any skills you might have, to before setting out. Try not to die of dysentery along the way, and since none of you are still ponies, no hitching each other to the wagons."

A rifle with no bullets was just fine with Gabrielle, who was significantly less than fond of guns anyway, although she did stop to pat the oxen on their muzzles and consider coming up with names for them.

"Wagons, ha," she said breezily. "It's so much more freeing to travel unburdened by anything but what you can carry, and live off the land as you go . . . but I guess that's not for everyone."

Please note that she wouldn't even think of stocking up on supplies on the way out; it was always 'we'll hold out with what we have until we find the next town, wherever that is' when it came to her and Xena's traveling policy.

Annie was one of those people who that was not for, which might be slightly obvious as she got to planning immediately. "Yeah, till we blow an axle and need another one. Plus we have no bullets. What are we going to do for food, club an ox over the head and cook it in front of its friends? Is there a price list somewhere....?"

So sorry, Annie, but Gabrielle was totally going to give you an odd look now. "So we'll go fishing, or rig up some snares, and what do we need a price list for anyway?" She enjoyed haggling. Some people had normal hobbies, but no. "And come on, do we really need all these wagons?"

"Probably not," she said, considering it. "Maybe if we sell one and the oxen to go with it, we can get enough for some spare parts and bullets. Because we need bullets. And we need a price list. If we know what we're spending it's easier to budget."

"I'm not shooting anything," Gabrielle said quickly, and luckily spared anyone within earshot the dubious fun of having to listen to her soapbox about not killing. Mostly because she opted for "I can't hit the side of a sleeping Cyclops with a bow and arrow, and you really don't want that. Actually, you don't want to spend too much money on food right away either, unless you like picking maggots out of your bread and your teeth."

"That's... an interesting mental image," Annie said slowly, trying not to look too grossed out. She failed. "Anyway, you don't have to shoot anything. I've been shooting zombies in class for months."

How many times had you had to shoot a zombie, Annie? How many? Yeah, thought so.

"So we'll just have to make sure we have enough money left over to buy things on the way when we need them!"

". . . I don't think zombies make very good eating," Gabrielle decided, in a turn for the stunningly obvious and beside the point. "And the less oxen we have to keep fed, the less we have to buy and haul around anyway, right? That's more money saved in case we need it later."
