Cooking For Beginners and Not-So-Beginners, Monday 3, Week 2

Steve's hopes that he would wake up this morning and have thumbs had been dashed. This made cooking class...substantially more complicated. It almost was enough to make him wish he'd held class last week, but it had been Independence Day. Also his ninety-fourth birthday.

"Hello, everyone," he said, glad that at least he'd turned into a pony that could talk. "Welcome to cooking class. We're not going to do introductions this week since some of us don't look like we normally do, anyway. I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday last week, and now that we're here...well, if you can cook without thumbs you're doing really well already, but we'll see what we can do. Anyone who does have thumbs, if you'd like to jump in and help your classmates if it looks like they're having difficulties, I would really appreciate it and will award extra credit. We were going to do breakfast this week, but now we're not." That involved the stove, and Steve hadn't figured out how to work the fire extinguisher with his hooves yet. "Instead, we're going to do sandwiches and salads."

"A lot of things fall under the umbrella of 'salad'--potato salad, tuna salad, pasta salad, cole slaw--but for our purposes, we're talking about salads eaten as a meal, which are generally leafy greens-based. A sandwich is...well, it's stuff between two slices of bread. Salads and sandwiches are great because most of the time, they require no or very little actual cooking, and depending on how you construct them, they can pack a lot of nutrition." Steve proceeded to talk about including protein and dairy in your salad, and how iceberg lettuce was nutritionally worthless but other vegetables contained great nutrients, using his nose to push around bowls of slightly mangled ingredients to illustrate his points. He also hit on using different but complementary flavors and textures, like crunchy nuts and creamy cheese or dressing.

"A lot of the same principles apply to sandwiches. A sandwich doesn't have to be just mayonnaise and turkey on white bread, or peanut butter and jelly--although peanut butter and whole grain bread do create a complete protein. You can get creative with your sandwiches and try out all sorts of combinations of breads and fillings, and, of course, everything's better with bacon. You can also grill or press a sandwich to make a hot meal, usually with melted cheese as the 'glue,' but again, we're not using the stove today." He paused for thought. "Except peanut butter and jelly. I don't see that going well. So, uh. Your assignment is now to assemble a sandwich or a salad from the handwavey ingredients provided, or at least try, and explain why you chose those ingredients."

The custodial troll was going to hate him.

Karla figured she had this assignment down. Not only was she a cooking genius normally, she still had Craft which could help mitigate the lack of thumbs. Today's class was going to be easy.

Seifer was just going to stare at the ponies and be thankful it wasn't him.

She had two pieces of bread. She had a jar of mayonnaise. She had a butter knife. Now all Karla had to do was open the damn jar.

...It was stuck. Also? Not responding to Craft.

Hmmm. This might get a little tricky.

Extra-credit was extra-credit, and Seifer was going to take advantage. Even if he had no idea who his classmates were.

"Need some help?"

Karla's little horn was brightly glowing and the mayonnaise jar was flailing around in the air like it had been filled with jumping beans and yet the damn thing still wouldn't open.

"It's impossible!" Karla declared. "It's completely stuck and will never ever open for anyone. Ever."

He had to blink a few times, the voice sounding familiar. "Karla?"

This was officially the weirdest thing ever. Even weirder than turning into a dog. "Um, want me to try?"

Karla stopped struggling with the jar to turn around and see who she was actually talking to. "Seifer? Why aren't you a pony?!"

Unfairest. Ever.

"Maybe they thought I wouldn't be sparkley enough?" He really had no idea, and he wasn't going to bitch. He looked her over and nodded. "Nice colors, the web is cool."

He was going to just reach for the jar as he spoke.

"It's a tangled web," Karla said with a nod. "Because I'm a Black Widow."

She had the snake-tooth beneath her hoof to prove it!

"I don't think it's going to come," she warned. "It's like...impossible."

It wasn't impossible.

Seifer just smirked and quickly twisted the top off the jar. (There may have been a bit of a boost there from Ifrit, but he wasn't telling anyone that.) He set both jar and lid on the counter and grinned.

"Not impossible."

Karla's jaw dropped. "How did you--I couldn't even--you used magic!"

"Not really," he told her with a wink.

"What are you making?"

"A sandwich!" Karla announced proudly. "With...stuff on it!"

Like mayonnaise! She hadn't gotten much further than that, however.

Okay, so, Kenzi had been hungry. She was just grazing on the baby spinach and radiccio and iceberg here. Also the carrots.

It was a free-form salad?

So when it came to guessing the identity of pony-fied classmates, Toby had something of an advantage. One that he didn't particularly feel like giving away just yet, which is why he approached Kenzi looking somewhat hesitant. "You wouldn't happen to be a certain someone who explored London with me last week, would you?"

Re: Assignment Time

[identity profile] regretiz4suckas.livejournal.com 2011-07-11 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Kenzi perked up and swished her tail immediately. Still noshing. "Mmm-hmm!" She swallowed. "Toby? Hey! It was the mane, wasn't it?" Not the ability to eat through anything. "You look cute as a pony! Not that anyone so far hasn't."

Re: Assignment Time

[identity profile] godgavemecable.livejournal.com 2011-07-12 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Toby was just glad he was currently dark blue (and that was never a sentence he'd ever thought he'd find himself, well, thinking), because Kenzi had totally just called him cute.

...As a pony, but still. It counted. Sort of? He hoped.

He scuffed one hoof on the floor and grinned a pony grin. "You look pretty awesome yourself. Did you know you've got a tattoo on your, uh..." he gestured with his head to her hindquarters.

He had one too, actually (five yellow squiggly lines arranged in a sunburst pattern the player was just not savvy enough to figure out how to 'shop them onto the pony image) he just hadn't actually managed to twist around enough to catch a glimpse of it.

It counted! Kenzi was pretty laid-back about this stuff, but Toby was pretty darn cute.

"On my ass? I do! It's a wallet!" Kenzi burbled, dancing in place a second, then craning her neck to check out Toby's butt-mark. Excuse her, Cutie Mark. "You've got a kinda exploding sun thing going, that's pretty cool. if random."

"I do?" Toby echoed, twisting around and craning his neck to see. "I do!" He had no idea what was up with the mark except that it was totally the stereotypical comic-book depiction of PSYCHIC POWAHS but hey, whatever. At least it wasn't a turnip.

Re: Assignment Time

[identity profile] regretiz4suckas.livejournal.com 2011-07-12 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
"Score!" Kenzi held up a front hoof for a, er. Hoof-bump. "It's like our superhero power tatts. How awesome is that?" She fluttered her wings. "AND AND AND I can totally fly!"

And and and she really really shouldn't try!

Re: Assignment Time

[identity profile] godgavemecable.livejournal.com 2011-07-12 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
"How does that work?" Toby couldn't help but wonder, returning the hoof-bump. Her wings were awesome, but they didn't look like they should be able to support an entire pony in flight.

[identity profile] regretiz4suckas.livejournal.com 2011-07-12 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
"SPEED!" Kenzi caught about three inches of air, and hovered, flaaaaapping furiously. "Pinkie told me about something called a sonic rainboom and if I have this long enough I'm going to try that and it'll be awesome!"

Re: Assignment Time

[identity profile] godgavemecable.livejournal.com 2011-07-12 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
"If you have this-" Toby broke off. "Oh man, no offense, I'm glad you're having fun and all, but I really hope this doesn't last too much longer."

Re: Assignment Time

[identity profile] regretiz4suckas.livejournal.com 2011-07-12 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Noooo, I get that," Kenzi said, half-pouting. A pouting pony. Picture that.

"I miss fingers. I miss not being a carnivore. I want a hamburger!" She sighed. Then brightened. "But I can do a back-flip and land on my feet!"

Always looking the bright side.

Re: Assignment Time

[identity profile] godgavemecable.livejournal.com 2011-07-12 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
"We should totally go for hamburgers once we turn back," Toby suggested, trusting that they would turn back. Fandom hadn't left him stranded in Victorian-era Toronto, he had to believe it wouldn't keep them as ponies forever.

Re: Assignment Time

[identity profile] regretiz4suckas.livejournal.com 2011-07-12 04:38 am (UTC)(link)
"This is a plan!" A plan Kenzi approved of, especially if Toby was buying! Of course, they could always just sneak out. "I bow to your knowledge of places to get burgers. Just, not Moobyland. Please." That cow kinda freaked her out. Especially now that she was a pony.
