How To Avoid Misadventure, Monday, Period 4

"They say trust must be earned over time," Morrigan stated abruptly once the class had arrived. "This is hogwash."

She wasn't in the best mood. She was a horse, of all things, which was a form she had never learned, nor had any desire to learn. All attempts at regaining her human body were futile, but she could still shift into other animals and back. It was easiest to speak the common tongue as a horse, however, for some odd reason. Horses did not have vocal cords like humans.

"Either you trust someone to have the same goals as you for the moment, or you do not. What they plan to do after your goals have been accomplished, that is not something to concern yourself with when on a quest. If you die now because you did not bring all your resources to bear, it is certain that you cannot be betrayed later."

"Right, you're such a complete optimist," Alistair said. He wasn't rolling his eyes, but only by sheer feat of will. "But she does have a point, I guess. The best friends you'll have are the ones at your side when you're fighting the same evil. Bonds like that can shape in an instant, especially among honorable men and women. That's why the Grey Wardens work: we're all united against the same enemy. Where we're from, who we used to be, that isn't important any longer." He snorted in a sort of... annoyed way. "Being a pony isn't the same thing, just so you know. That's just up there with 'victims of badly placed spells'."

"Honor has no place in practicality," Morrigan pointed out. "Survival does. But, 'tis true, that those fighting with you against some 'evil,'" and yes, you could hear the finger-quotes there. "-are your staunchest allies."

"And so, 'tis time for you to test yourselves. Do you count yourself a good judge of character? If so, then find an ally to light your campfire with." Morrigan's smile probably wasn't friendly. "Do hope they do not set you on fire, and remember, 'tis them that would hold watch while you sleep."

Creepy, Morrigan, very creepy. And yes, she was aware that many of the students were also ponies. It just made the exercise vastly more amusing.

"Creeeeepy," Alistair said, dutifully. "Look, while you get around to this exercise, could someone maybe... scratch my back? I have this horrible itch near my hindquarters."

Mercy had been kind of a bum yesterday and hadn't left her room. Which meant that since she hadn't changed herself, tis whole 'everyone's a little pony' thing was freaking her out a little.

Ariel listened to this lecture with a bit of a frown on her face. Sure, she'd made some pretty bad judgement on characters in the past, but she still preferred to feel that most people were trustworthy first and foremost. Ah, well. She supposed not everyone could be so optimistic about the whole idea.

Karla could use her magic horn to take notes, but she was busier using magic to keep baby cheetah-Bart from running around the classroom instead.

No, Quinn couldn't take notes, so she was going to pout. First she had to come to this class on a holiday, now she had to come with hooves? Mondays were cruel.

Warren had kind of decided to lay low yesterday. Suddenly finding himself a shape that he wasn't used to or expecting still didn't sit so well with him. But since he had class today, he was out and about. If looking a little awkward as he stood around and listened to the lecture.

It helped that he wasn't the only pony here by a long shot.

"Well, I don't reallly do quests, more like schemes," Miley clarified right off the bat. "I mean, I don't do the whole fighting-evil thing. But it's totally cool for those who do; I just mean, you know, it hasn't really come up for me. But I guess I do most of my, um, antics with my best friend Lilly, because we have fun together and she's willing to do what it takes to accomplish what we need to do, even if it means looking silly."

God. Lilly had no issues of looking silly after being Miley-trained for four years.

"So that'd be it, I guess. If you're fun and committed, I think we could have a good alliance together."

"I guess someone who seems to have the same goals as I do," Mercy said, still rather wide-eyed over her classmates and teachers. "And someone who's not likely to try and kill me when my back is turned."

"I think," said Ariel, with a smile that called for putting her giant pony eyes to good use, "that anyone who would like to join a quest should. You never know who could turn out to be a surprising friend or a great deal of help. Even if you think they might be bad, they could just be misunderstood, or maybe they're just bad because no one else has ever really given them a chance before."

"You need to pick someone who will stay with the mission even if they disagree," Quinn said, and blew her mane out of her face again. "Someone loyal, you know? So you don't waste time fighting. And it helps if they have strengths you don't have."

"I suppose I look for somebody who'll get the job done," Warren offered after a moment of kind of chewing on the question. "If I can pick from a group of people that I already know, all the better. But if it's something really important, familiarity would have to take a backseat to competency."

Yes, this from the guy whose biggest talents were flying, an uncontrollable healing factor, and throwing up in the aftermath.

"I wouldn't look for a companion," Kate answered honestly. "Why drag anyone else into a situation that could get them killed?" Kate was stubbornly self-reliant. Putting people in the line of fire for her cause wasn't something she'd do.

"I would say that I'd look for someone loyal," Elphaba decided. "Someone who wouldn't betray our cause for money or secret gains. But then, well... I think as long as they were loyal and not apt to get us hurt, I'd be willing to accept anyone."

"Ahh. Companion. Well, I like... smart people," Jack said lamely. "And um, people who are strong. Did I mention smart?"

Jack is really not a thinker.

OOoooh, this part was easy, even if she was a pony.

Angelica looked left, then right. She didn't have to be scared about using her powers, everyone had told her that. So she concentrated, staring at the kindling, and a few seconds later it burst into flames.

Mercy was perfectly capable of lighting her own fire, even with just two pieces of wood - thank you, Charles - but she was looking around to see if anyone wanted to ally with her.

Oh, how Kate wished she could stare things into flame. This wasn't the first time she'd wished it, either.

Just because she knew she couldn't, wouldn't stop her from trying, and between that and her all around irritation at her current shape, the consequential dip in control left her magic to coalescing into an invisible cloud of power around her.

Still she glared at her pile of sticks, and they stayed a dry and cold pile of sticks. This was destined to take a while.

Ariel really didn't know how to make fire without matches or anything like that, but she remembered seeing on a movie or a television show about hitting rocks together hard enough to strike a fire. So she put together some kindling, made a nice little pile, and went through several attempts to try to knock her hooves together enough to get a spark going.
