Tricks, Cons and Bamboozles | Tuesday | Period 4
So. Teaching.
When the Tricks, Cons and Bamboozles students arrived for class today, they would find their teacher ungodly attractive standing at the front of the room, clad in an expensive suit with his ankle tracker left deliberately visible on the outside of his pants. Some might argue that that would hurt his credibility as a teacher. Neal saw it differently.
“Welcome to Tricks, Cons and Bamboozles,” he said once everyone was seated. “I’m going to be upfront with you and tell you that teaching isn’t something I ever planned to be doing. But you’re here and I’m here, and it’s my job to teach you all a little something about being wily and persuasive – and most of all, successful.”
“But first,” he continued, “I’m going to challenge you all. A lot of teachers might have you introduce yourselves on the first day. I want you to bullshit me.” He doubted this was the kind of school where he could come under fire for using bad language, but if it was, it wasn’t like he’d ever gotten a high school diploma or sufficient experience in a high school environment to teach him that. “Introduce yourselves and try to convince me you’re someone else. Your classmates and I will be free to ask you questions to try and trip you up. Starting now.”
He pointed at someone, then gestured to the front of the room and took a seat on top of an empty desk in the first row. “Go.”

She gave a long-suffering sigh. "Maintain security for the school," she began. "Organize the finances. Decide which graduates are sent on which missions. Oversee the final exams, and the faculty. It's a huge headache."

Rinoa had had the small amount of foresight necessary to say she was a former headmaster, and not the current one -- otherwise it would make no sense for Quistis to be here, instead of running the school. She hadn't had time to think the gambit out beyond that.
There was a slight uncomfortable pause, and Rinoa glanced at the desk. "It's embarrassing," she said. When in doubt, stall.
And when in deep enough trouble, use as much of the truth as possible, twisted around to suit your own needs.
"Fine," she snapped. "I'm not supposed to be Headmaster. The previous Headmaster retired, and left his successor in charge. His successor quit two months later so he could moon around after his girlfriend. They're here. So I came to talk some sense into him." By force if necessary went unspoken at the end.

"Didn't think about maybe holding interviews, putting an ad up on Craigslist?" Neal asked, looking more than a little smug.

"We can't leave just anyone in charge," she said. "Headmaster Cid was very specific about who was supposed to run Garden after he retired. You can't just throw aside your responsibilities because of some girl."
Okay, the jig seemed to be up, so Rinoa couldn't help adding, "Besides, I'm still in love with him myself, even if I'm in denial about it, and I'm jealous about him running off with her and not me. So now I have to sit around being the Headmaster while they make googly eyes at each other. It's nauseating."

"Right," he laughed. "Well. That was quite a performance, ah...?"
Officially the funniest one of the day, that was for sure.
