So. Teaching.

When the Tricks, Cons and Bamboozles students arrived for class today, they would find their teacher ~~ungodly attractive~~ standing at the front of the room, clad in an expensive suit with his ankle tracker left deliberately visible on the outside of his pants. Some might argue that that would hurt his credibility as a teacher. Neal saw it differently.

“Welcome to Tricks, Cons and Bamboozles,” he said once everyone was seated. “I’m going to be upfront with you and tell you that teaching isn’t something I ever planned to be doing. But you’re here and I’m here, and it’s my job to teach you all a little something about being wily and persuasive – and most of all, successful.”

“But first,” he continued, “I’m going to challenge you all. A lot of teachers might have you introduce yourselves on the first day. I want you to bullshit me.” He doubted this was the kind of school where he could come under fire for using bad language, but if it was, it wasn’t like he’d ever gotten a high school diploma or sufficient experience in a high school environment to teach him that. “Introduce yourselves and try to convince me you’re someone else. Your classmates and I will be free to ask you questions to try and trip you up. Starting now.”

He pointed at someone, then gestured to the front of the room and took a seat on top of an empty desk in the first row. “Go.”

Nathan hadn't even thought of a story for himself. He was just gonna let it flow. Leaning back in his seat, he crossed his arms and looked nonchalant about the whole thing.

"Seamus O'Sullivan, at your service," he said, giving Professor Caffrey a brief nod. Hey, at least he had the authentic accent, right? "This is me first time in a public school, sir. Back in Ireland, me mum had me enrolled in an Irish Catholic school and I must say, I never knew public school was like this."

Nathan could do wide eyed and amazed very well, thank you. He considered himself an excellent bullshitter.

That was one hell of an accent. Neal was impressed.

"You seem to have picked up the public school attire pretty well for a first-timer," he observed casually. "Perfect slacker uniform."

"It's what we can afford," Nathan remarked, shrugging. That much, at least, was true. He couldn't afford much more than he had right now. "A move from Ireland to the United States does cost a pretty penny, mate. Me dad's looking for a job but no luck yet. We're scraping by."

Great. Make Neal sympathetic.

"That's too bad," he said, and at least he was sincere there. "Why'd you move?"

"Me dad's bank closed down," Nathan replied, shrugging. "We had enough in savings to make our way to the land of the free, the home of the brave so he could find new work. Apparently, getting a job's just as hard in America as it in Ireland. Go figure, yeah?"

"Recessions'll do that to you," Neal said, even though that wasn't really a problem he'd encountered in his line of work. "What bank would that be?"

"Naspa Dublin," Nathan replied, shrugging again. It was the only bank he knew since it wasn't like he had money to do shit back home. A chick he'd been trying to shag had give him her card once and she'd worked there and the name had stuck.

"It was sad when they closed their doors. Me mum cried and me dad drank and drank. You know how us Irish are, mate."

That... was a good point. Not that someone would need to be Irish to be aware of that.

Except, well.

"Naspa Dublin didn't close," Neal pointed out. He had money in there, so. He would know. "Was it just a particular branch? I didn't notice anything in the bank closings."

"You expect me to know all that, mate?" Nathan asked, frowning mightily at him. "Me dad lost his job! I didn't ask the hows and whys. We were kind of too busy trying to figure out how we were gonna eat!"

"Pathos," Neal observed, nodding approvingly. "Nice."

Not a perfect strategy, but a good one.

"You passed," he informed Nathan. "Is the accent yours?"

"It's all mine though I don't normally lay it on so thick." Oh, that was a lie, he totally used his accent to his advantage. "Can't go wrong with an accent, right?"

"I hear that," Neal agreed. He could do a decent accent himself -- though probably not Irish -- but he'd save that for another class. "Real name?"

"Nathan Young," he provided easily. "Really from Ireland but late of England. I've got no ties to Naspa Dublin except there a chick I wanted to shag worked there."

"It's not a bad bank," Neal couldn't help mentioning. Nope, Nathan's crudeness didn't bother him a bit. "Very discreet."

Like he needed to know that.

"If I ever get rich, I'll keep that in mind," Nathan said even if he knew he'd just blow money on booze and hookers, probably.

"You do that."

Maybe he'd get a bonus out of the referral. That'd be nice.
