Social Activism- Monday- Period 1- Class #1

Hermione loved the start of a new class, and today was no exception. In fact, having two sessions a summer made it seem a lot like the very first day of a new school year twice in a matter of months. Add in the fact that they were in London and Hermione was a happy girl today.

"Hello everyone, and welcome to Social Activism. You can call me Miss Granger," she greeted them with a smile. And yes, she was still sticking with the Miss Granger thing. "If you're in this class, you're probably either here because of a paperwork error, or because you're interested in bringing about some kind of change in the world. Hopefully most of you are here for the second reason.

"To give you a little background on my experience here, when I was fourteen I started the Society for the Protection of Elfish Welfare, also known as S.P.E.W." She pronounced every letter separately and would get very upset if anyone called it 'Spew.' "There were house elves who worked as unpaid servants at my school and for some of the wizarding families that were being treated unfairly, and needed someone to stand up for them." No, they'd been fine on their own. "I tried to get the word out about the conditions in which they were working, organized clothing drives in order to free them, even fought for their rights back home while I was a student here." Please, please don't ask her how. "I think a lot of the time, people want to make a difference, but don't think they can or don't know where to start, especially when you're younger. But I managed to do some good-" Debatable. "-and I hope to be able to teach you how to be able to do the same." Truth. She was misguided in her cause, but she had a good system going. "Now, in this class we're going to learn about the different methods you can use in order to get things done, but first, I'd like to get to know who you are and what you're passionate about. So I'd like everyone to go around the room and tell me your name, year in school, and a cause you feel strongly about."

Jeez. Was this lady for real? This was the last class Topher would want to take. Maybe he could drop it and replace it with another science...

While the brief overview of Hermione's background in activism was interesting, Bruce found himself wondering if she realized just how terrible an acronym 'SPEW' was. She must have. If she didn't, she would have pronounced it as a word.

Elves. Wizards. Ryan liked the idea of social activism but wasn't sure just what she had signed up for.

Oh, this was perfect. Miss Granger had actually started her own movement. Rinoa was impressed. She'd just joined one, and helped to fund it with Daddy's money.

Squall sighed at Miss Granger's story, and watched Rinoa watching her.

(This is going to end with me fighting to liberate the house elves, isn't it?)

"Uh, hey," Topher said, and his disinterest in this class was completely obvious, thank you very much. "Topher Brink. Sophomore. And I'm not so much into the whole 'causes' thing. Sorry."

"My name is Raven, and I will be a senior in the fall," she said. She was still having a hard time believing that. "I do not think I have a specific cause as you did, but I believe very strongly in avoiding violence. I know that it is sometimes necessary, but I always hope there are ways to bring peace that do not require it."

"Bruce Wayne. I'm a senior, and I'm pretty dedicated to raising living standards in my hometown of Gotham City," Bruce said.

And he didn't mean just by punching crooks in the face.

"I'm Billy Kaplan, I'm a sophomore, and um, my cause would probably be gay rights." If that last bit came out a little quiet, it was because he was still getting used to being at a school where he probably wouldn't get the crap kicked out of him for saying that.

"Elphaba Thropp, I am a senior now, and I suppose my cause is animal rights," she said. She was very unaware as to how much that would be her cause in the future. "I do try not to... it is a strange matter, for me, as there seems to be a difference between animals between Oz and this world."

"William Murdoch," William introduced himself. "Second year- or... sophmore, I suppose, is the term?" He hadn't actually ever anticipated going this far in school, after all.

"I haven't much experience with causes, really, but I have to confess my time here has made me quite interested in the idea of offering educational opportunities to those who might not otherwise have access to them." Like himself. He was pretty sure he'd be working some sort of manual labour job if he hadn't come to Fandom.

"Hi, I'm Karla and I'm a rising junior," Karla answered when it was her turn. She'd had enough time to think about what cause she was most into while other people had taken their turns. "Probably mutant and meta rights."

"I'm Dolf," Dolf said. He still wasn't looking his best, but he was trying. "I'm a... I'm a junior now, I think. And I have a problem with anyone who doesn't take care of their people."

Please excuse his somewhat lacklustre performance.

"Gabrielle," she said with a nod, "and I'm a senior, and if there's any one cause I want to work for more than anything else, it's finding a way to stop the cycle of hatred and violence."

Way to aim for something reasonable, Gabrielle.

"Oh, boy, hi!" said Butters, brimming with excitement. There were causes! And stuff! It was all a lot to take in and look forward to. "My name's Butters, and I do a lot of great things for good causes! I save a part of my allowance to send to poor people, and I write letters to people who might need a friend, and I volunteer at the old folks home, at least I used to back in Colorado. Let me see...oh, yeah, bake sales for charity and I'm in Scouts and there's food drives, and recycling programs. One of my favorites is the Christmas knitting one! You get to knit hats and gloves and scarves for people who might not have any."

Which meant that Kenny had a whole closet full of rainbow scarves made by Butters that he would never ever wear.
