Winter Sports, Monday, Period Two

Bond had informed his class that they should meet him in the Danger Shop this morning. When they arrived they found themselves standing at the top of a very long, very steep track with a small sled placed at the starting line.

"Good morning, and welcome to Winter Sports, which I trust will need very little explanation of the course material," Bond, who just happened to be wearing a bodysuit, helmet, and booties, began. "Today we'll be starting with luge. Now, luge is considered one of the most dangerous sports today, so even with the Danger Shop's safety protocols, you'll first be changing into the provided safety gear."

After the class had changed, he continued. "Now, I could give you a very long and detailed lecture on the history of luge, and the physics of it, but really, the point of the class is doing, so you'll be taking turns to go down the track one by one before we do introductions at the bottom of the track. Now if you'll watch me for the correct form."

With that, Bond sat on the sled and launched himself down the track.

Lion-o was fidgeting around in an effort to stay warm while he waited. He would be jogging in place if he could in these weird boots.

"My name is Lion-o and I'll be a senior this fall," he began. "I don't really have any favorite winter sports since we didn't have a winter on my home planet."

Lion-o got off to a good start but crashed midway through the course. In hindsight, he realized he was going too fast to control the sled through the turns.

Jack found the safety gear difficult to get in to, but he managed to suit up and look pretty damned good in it. The booties were weird though.

"Nervous?"

Jack had watched luge on TV, but had never tried it himself. All he knew was to go fast and try to make turns. The turns he managed okay at first, because he wasn't going so fast. As the speed picked up, he slid up the sides and came close to tipping more than once. On the second last turn, he crashed out. While he expected to tumble, the safety protocols kicked in and was safely down the bottom.

Safety protocols couldn't stop the adrenaline rush from tipping though.

"Jack McCallister, senior, skiing. Hockey is good too."

"I take it you're not?" It figured, being she was the only girl in the class.

"Have you looked down there? Of course I am." He wasn't showing it though.

"Oh good, if I was alone in that I might have to hit you and try to make you be scared." Not that it made sense for her to be afraid of a danger shop luge.

Jason had seen people do this on TV, but he'd never done it himself. Following the lead, he got into the sled, and hollered the whole way down. Speed was an amazing thing sometimes.

"Jason Todd, sophomore, hockey," he said with a smile. "I don't have a favorite team or anything, but it's fun to watch."

"Hitting me probably wouldn't work." He didn't know how hard Caroline could hit.

He was hilarious. "It probably wouldn't be very nice of me to say I bet I can hit harder than you can, huh?"

At least she was momentarily distracted from the luge track?

"Lying isn't very nice," he pointed out.

Of course he thought she was lying. "Noooo, but it might be fun for you to test my theory! In like, a non-painful way." Since she didn't want to hurt him when he was looking all hot in the luge outfit.

"We can't punch each other. You could punch me, but I can't punch you back so you'd win by default. I don't see a way for me to win this."

Caroline laughed, reaching to pat his arm consolingly. "First, why can't you punch me back? And second, good God, I was not suggesting we actually hit each other. We could like, arm wrestle while we wait for our turns or something."

"I'd hurt you and I have a policy about not intentionally hurting friends. I'm taking you up on the arm wrestle, though not here. IOU?"
