Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

Stark had somehow missed the pink pony earlier in the picnic. Probably he'd been distracted by cupcakes, or by something else. He was fairly easily distracted at times.

When she cartwheeled in front of him, however, she was pretty much impossible not to see.

"I think," he said, smiling (really, who wouldn't smile at a pink pony cartwheeling?) slightly, "you are having more fun here than anyone else."

"That's 'cause there's no music," Pinkie decided. "Parties should be fun for everypony!"

"I never noticed there was no music," Stark admitted. "There never is, at these, I think. Only at the dances. At least I don't remember music at any of the picnics, only at dances but I have not been to one of those in a long time." At least he didn't think so.

"But I think it can be fun without music. Can't it?"

"Well of course! All you need to have fun at a party is some friends. But music can make it better. Just like cake!"

"There are cupcakes," Stark said as if this was very important information. Which it was, to Stark. "Even chocolate ones." He waved a hand in their general direction. "Better than regular cake, I think."

"They're bite-size," Pinkie said. On the other hand, so were full sized cakes, for Pinkie. She could take very large bites. "I like apple cupcakes, too."

"They are," Stark agreed. "Well, the tiny ones are. The normal sized ones usually take a few bites." He had a much smaller jaw than a pony did, after all. "I don't know if I have had apple ones. I've had strawberry. And raspberry. And some very frightening flavors. Better not to talk about those. Or think about them. Unless I have to. I teach a class on cupcakes, now. For the summer. With Anders."

"That sounds super fun! I'm going to teach a class on parties."

"It is fun," Stark said. "I like it. Even when I have to show them the tuna cupcakes. Or when the students say maybe the tuna cupcakes aren't so bad. Or the ham ones." He shook his head sadly. Poor misguided students. He'd tried. "But I love cupcakes. What do you talk about in a class on parties? Music, and cake, I would guess. What else?"

"Themes and invitations and decorations and games!"

"I hope it goes well," Stark said. "I am sure the students will enjoy that." After all, what part of cake, music, and games was not enjoyable?

"Are you liking the island, so far?"

"I am! But I don't think the pegasus ponies have done a very good job on the weather. A party like this should have clear skies."

"Pegasus ponies?" Stark repeated, confused. "I don't know what those are. I don't think we have them. The weather is just the weather. Stranger than normal, this summer, because the island keeps moving. It does that, sometimes. Not that anything here is ever really normal. I suppose it's normal for here, but not for anywhere else."

"If it were normal for anywhere else, it would be anywhere else," Pinkie decided. "You mean the weather here is just . . . chaos?"

"This island could never be anywhere else," Stark said. "Although, sometimes it is other places but that's because it moves. Not because it's changed what it is. Only where."

"I don't think I've ever been anywhere the weather wasn't chaos. The command carrier had controlled weather inside part, but that was for training and it was a ship so it doesn't really count. And some places there wasn't weather at all but those places were all inside things. But anywhere there was weather it was just random. Yes, chaos. But that's how weather is. Isn't it?"

"Not when there's pegasus ponies to hoof-craft the snow flakes and make rainbows. Who scores the ice in the winter to make sure it all melts in time for spring?!"

"We do not have pegasus ponies to do that," Stark said. "Clouds for snow, and water and light for rainbows. And the ice melts when it's too warm to be frozen anymore. Where are you from?"

"But then who puts the clouds there? Who fills them with rain and snow?" Pinkie's mind was blown. She leaned in closer and closer as she talked -- until she overbalanced and fell on her face. "Ponies do everything in Equestria!"

Stark bent down to offer a hand in case the pony needed help getting back to her feet. He wasn't quite sure how to help a pony up, but it seemed like he needed to at least offer.

"It's just the weather," Stark said. "No one does it, it does itself. Are you all right?"

Pinkie appreciated the offer, but, well, to take it, she'd kind of have to bite him. And that would be rude.

"Okey-dokey-lokey! That happens sometimes." She sprawled her legs out in four directions, then popped back up to her hooves. "Thanks, though!"

Stark appreciated not being bitten. Or he would, if he knew he there had been a possibility of biting.

"Not a problem," he said. "I'm Stark. I don't think I said before."

"Hi Stark! I'm Pinkie Pie! It's great to meet you!"
