Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

This guy looked like he would have fit in to that circus class last session. A strong man or something like that.

"Nice party trick," Richie remarked. "You do that with other food, or is olive-exclusive?"

Hercules popped the olive into his mouth, then shook his head.

"No. But this was the least messy option that presented itself," he said. "And this party is... lacking. Hence the little trick."

"Never thought about sticking olives to my arm to liven up a party," Richie said. "That's a new one. Does it work?"

"When I go to most parties, there is alcohol," Herc said. "There is no need for olive silliness."

He shrugged. "I suppose there would be fear of the too young imbibing, if such was to happen here."

"Drinking ages kind of get in the way of alcohol at school picnics," Richie agreed. Which was, well, a little disappointing. "At least the food's good. You'd think somebody would spike something, though."

Hercules paused, thinking about that for a moment.

"...probably not a good idea on my first day," he decided.

"Might not go over well with the administration," Richie said, nodding. "You're a new teacher, right? I don't think they want you getting us drunk. Unless maybe they'd let you have a class on it..."

Hey, they seemed to have classes on everything else, so why not?

Hercules filed that thought away for 'maybe next term'.

"I am new," Hercules agreed. "Though I am probably older than most. I am Hercules. From Greece."

"Hercules," Richie repeated. "From Greece." This island just kept getting weirder, didn't it?

"Well, I'm Richie from Seacouver. Which sounds a hell of a lot less impressive. Not that it ever sounded all that impressive. And I'm pretty sure I'm taking your class." You'd think he might have noticed the teacher was named Hercules a littler earlier, but no. That would have meant he was paying attention.

"Well good," Hercules said, with a nod of his head. "I hope you are ready for adventure and hard work. As those are key ingredients in forging a hero."

"It also helps to have a strong heart, too."

"How much hard work?" Richie asked. A little bit warily, to be sure. He didn't know how he kept ending up in these courses, but he was pretty sure Mac was back in Seacouver snickering about it. "Adventure sounds good though. And my heart's, uh, I dunno. Never thought about it."

"A hero is not created through an easy life," Hercules said, cryptically. "Be prepared for anything. That is all I will give away before the first class."

Well, that was comforting. Or mildly terrifying, really.

"Okay. Last round I had a class called "Try Not To Die!!" and I didn't. Hopefully I can make it through this too."

"That sounds like a class you do not wish to fail!" Herc said, punctuated with a laugh. "I won't put you in such dire circumstances. At least, not in the first week."

Richie was getting the feeling that maybe this teacher was kind of nuts.

"Well, that's good. I think. Uh, thanks."

Richie was pretty much on the money.

"But I don't intend to kill anyone. Just do your best, as I don't want to see anyone not living up to their potential. Simple rule, no?"

"Simple enough," Richie said with a nod. "I can probably handle that." Even if it meant another class where he couldn't be lazy. Life was just so hard, sometimes. But he was grateful there wasn't going to be any serious possibility of death. That was always a plus.

"Good," Hercules said, punctuated with a nod. "Is there anything else you wish to know now?"

"Nah." Richie shook his head. "Gotta leave a few surprises for the weeks ahead, don't I? Thanks though."

"You're welcome," Hercules said, stroking his beard. "I wish you a good rest of the day. And I'll see you on Friday."
