Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

[OCD is up! This is the SECOND post for general mingling. Use this post if your browser can't handle the comment load of the first mingling post. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"A bit," Warren admitted, ruffling his slightly soggy feathers a little in an attempt to get them to dry faster. It wasn't working so well, considering the humidity. Ugh. "And you can't really fly in it, either. But... hey, rain happens, right?"

He turned to Wesley and nodded hello, smiling faintly. "How are you doing?"

Huh. But birds flew in the rain, didn't they? Wesley would have to contemplate this in greater detail later.

"Suprisingly alright," came his answer. Which was as much of a surprise to him as it was to anyone else who might possibly be surprised. "It's been a manageable summer, all things considered."

Or, you know, that one thing considered.

"How have you been?"

Well, birds could. But they weren't half as vain as Warren was, generally.

"I've been... not too bad, considering, myself," Warren replied, fidgeting slightly for a brief moment, there. "There are worse things than manageable, right? You've been holding up, though. That's kind of..."

Wow, Warren was bad with this sort of thing.

"Impressive?"

[identity profile] wesleynotponcy.livejournal.com 2011-07-02 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
That was more than okay, since Wesley was just as bad at being on the receiving end of... whatever this was. "Thank you," he said, shifting a bit awkwardly.

Hmm. What to say, what to say... oh!

"So, ah, what classes are you taking this term?"

"Oh, you know... Physical education, a class about avoiding misadventure and another one on... uh... being a hero."

Warren's expression went a little sheepish, at that.

"I need a little bit of work."

Wesley grinned. "I'm sure it'll be very informative, if anything," he said. No judging here. "In any event, I'm taking one on how to talk during combat and one on... not dying."

He needed a little bit of work there too.

"Dying is kind of bad for you," Warren offered. Because... well, it was, okay? "I did see the one on talking in combat and thought about it for a bit, but the other two kind of seemed more important at the time."

That, and he didn't know how many classes he could handle being mocked about being blue by Deadpool.

He wasn't blue! Honest!

[identity profile] wesleynotponcy.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes, I'd say heroics and avoiding misadventure are rather more important than witty banter," Wesley agreed, although Buffy would have something else to say about that.

Plus, instead of getting mocked about being blue, Wesley would probably get called Limey a lot and mocked on the radio. Thanks, Deadpool.

See, Wesley? That's what you got for being adorable and British. But on the plus side, plenty of vitamin c? No scurvy for you!

"Considering the trouble I tend to get into around here, I figured I was probably going to need them. Besides, I hang around with Bobby Drake. If his banter doesn't rub off on me, then I'm pretty much doomed, I think."

[identity profile] wesleynotponcy.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
"I could arrange for private lessons for you," Wesley said dryly. "I know someone who considers her witty banter her greatest skill."

Actually, she would probably say it was her ability to fight using witty banter and not break a nail.

And, see, Warren had never really had cause to worry about broken nails.

"Oh, yeah? She gets a lot of practice with it, I take it?"

"Far, far more than is healthy," Wesley assured Warren.

So much more. Very possibly more than Deadpool. She turned it into an art.

"I think any amount of it probably isn't all that healthy," Warren pointed out, "but at the same time..."

He was intrigued, so help him.

"I'm not really one for quipping in a fight. I'm kind of more like the freaking out and hitting things and hoping they don't hit me back type."

Re: More General Mingling [SS2 2011]

[identity profile] wesleynotponcy.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
"That's always been my strategy," Wesley agreed. "There's also occasional, er, shrieking." Hey, as long as the cards were on the table...

"But alright, if you're interested, I suppose I can spend ten minutes on WikiQuote remember some one-liners. For example, er..." He assumed a strange, feminine tone. "'Vampire, meet dust. Dust, you already know vampire.'"

A pause.

"Most of the one-liners were, ah, fairly vampire-centric."

"Vampires," Warren echoed, scrunching his nose a little as he remembered his own run-in with the one from Sookie's world. Really, he wasn't much of a fan of anything that took messy bites out of him. "You, uh, get a lot of those where you're from, then?"

Re: More General Mingling [SS2 2011]

[identity profile] wesleynotponcy.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
"Unfortunately, yes," Wesley replied. "Actually, at my old school, I was training to... dispose of them. It's still a little odd when people here aren't familiar with them."

"Well, for what it's worth, I'm a guy with wings," Warren noted, "and I wasn't familiar with very much at all before I came here. We do have vampires where I'm from, I'm pretty sure. We have a lot where I'm from. But I haven't really seen much of it."

...

"Until I came here, anyhow."

Re: More General Mingling [SS2 2011]

[identity profile] wesleynotponcy.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
"Fandom does certainly open one up to a variety of experiences," Wesley conceded. "Like... well, people with wings. I've adjusted."

Back home, people with wings were demons. Or sometimes Cordelia.

"And so have I, for the most part," Warren decided. "There are still things that throw me off, sure, but I like to think that those are the things that would throw most people off."

Hopefully.

"I like to think of it that way as well," Wes agreed. "Last month's spiders, for instance. And the weekend I turned into a farmhand. But things like ancient Greece don't seem to bother me anymore."

[personal profile] wwiii 2011-07-03 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
"Yeah, Greece is pretty okay," Warren agreed with a nod. "But I'm kind of hoping I never turn into a four-pack of beer again."

Somebody had drank part of him!

Re: More General Mingling [SS2 2011]

[identity profile] wesleynotponcy.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh!" Wow, that was a new one. "I... have to say that's a new one."

Beer? Really?

"I have to ask," Wesley said, holding up a finger. "Were you... sentient?"

Re: More General Mingling [SS2 2011]

[personal profile] wwiii 2011-07-03 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
"Not really," Warren replied, after a moment's consideration. "I mean... not enough to be freaked out that I was beer, or anything. I mean, now, after the fact, all that I kind of vaguely remember is that I was, and... stuff."

Being drank.

"But it isn't like I minded, or had enough of a mind in there to be able to care in the first place. Me remembering at all is probably just Fandom being Fandom, you know?"

Re: More General Mingling [SS2 2011]

[identity profile] wesleynotponcy.livejournal.com 2011-07-03 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Oh, yes, of course," said Wesley, nodding. "So you probably weren't conscious at the time. That makes the most sense, at any rate; I was barely sentient when I was an owl, and that at least was a living thing. Even transfigured beer likely doesn't think very much."
Oh.

"Er, no offense."

"None taken," Warren chuckled, shrugging his shoulders lightly. "I'm pretty sure that's probably for the best. What would beer even think about, besides somebody drinking it?"
