Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

In order to give people a place to get away from the traffic jam of the buffet and information tables, most of the chairs and tables for guests were set up further out on the lawn, under a tall blue and gold tent. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit down and enjoy themselves, but it might not have all been dry. Did we mention being grateful that it was just water falling from the sky?

"Where was the apple when she tried to steal it?" Sam wondered, raising an eyebrow. "Were you like, eating it? Did she try to steal it right out of your mouth? If she'd managed to succeed, I would have had to be impressed."

"If she'd managed *that* without me noticing i'd be a little concerned," Toby snickered, pulling the apple out of his hoodie pocket. "I had it tucked in here."

"And she tried to reach in there without buying you dinner first?" Sam asked, raising an eyebrow. "How forward of her. I think you and her just had a first date, Toby."

"Call me old fashioned, but here I was thinking dinner was supposed to be the first date," Toby retorted.

"Does that mean you're actually planning a first date dinner with your potential apple stealer?" Sam teased.

"What? I! No!" Toby blushed. Truth be told, he wouldn't exactly object to the idea, but... he didn't exactly have a lot of experience in the area of romance.

"Hey, what was I supposed to think?" Sam asked innocently. "You seem to have a first date idea all set up and a girl trying to steal your apple is like the greatest of great 'this is how I me my sweetie' stories. It sounded like a sweet setup to me."

"Yeah, I dunno, someone who steals shit for fun might find dinner a little tame," Toby muttered.

"Does she know you can do the thing with the thing?" Sam asked, gesturing to his head to indicate Toby's telepathy.

"Nah," Toby shrugged. "She just thinks I'm really observant, or something, to catch her trying to filch stuff." And it was... sort of true? He just had an observational advantage most people didn't.

"So, I shouldn't count on a wedding between you and apple girl?" Sam asked, deciding he was talking to milk that joke for all it was worth because it was fun and Toby was fun to tease.

Just so long as he understood that Toby was gonna tease right back! "Sam, I never knew you were such a closet romantic," he declared. "I mean, first you're planning my first date, now you wanna plan a wedding..."

"Hey, I hang out with dead people," Sam reminded him, making a face. "They don't exactly need weddings, man! I've gotta let the romantic inside of me out to play and who better to do it with then a guy whose gonna marry a girl who has stolen his apple...as well as his heart."

Sam made a face before shaking his head and making a cutting gesture near his throat. "That's as close to calling me a girl as I'm gonna let you get before I start making raunchy jokes about what she might have been aiming for instead of the apple."
