With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Pining, actually," Cindy said, pretending to wipe away her tears. "One day you were here, the next you were gone and I was left behind, bereft and broken-hearted."

"Was there knitting of socks too?" Because he'd be very impressed if that was the case.

"Crocheting," Cindy corrected. "Knitting is hardly romantic. It doesn't give the right image."

"I don't know how comfortable crocheted socks would be though," Guy countered. Because this was the strangest conversation he'd had in a while.

A least an entire week.

"Good thing I only made doilies," Cindy said brightly. "But now all your couches and nightstands will be beautifully covered by gorgeously, intricate doilies."

The saddest part? She could do it. Oh, the eighteenth century, how she did not miss you.

Well, parts.

And that was why Guy was so glad to live in the twenty-first century. "Hopefully my housemate likes that kind of thing."

Maybe of there was a bromance...

A rad bromance?

"Who doesn't want to live in a grandmother's sitting room?" Cindy asked with a grin.

Ra ra oo la la.

"If he puts plastic on the couches, I'm finding a new place to live."

"And everything could smelled like dried lavender," Cindy suggested. "And the only thing to drink would be sherry."

"Can't forget about candy in little glass bowls either," Guy added.

"Old, stale, and sticky candy?" Cindy asked. "The kind that hasn't been manufactured since the fifties?"

That got an exaggerated shudder. "Same with all of 'em, huh?"

Cindy was pretty much describing every apartment on the Thirteenth Floor, swear to the Mundy God.

"One of the lesser-known side-effects of menopause," she assured him.

Guy blinked hard. "Yeah, I never wanted to think of any grandma like that."

"You're welcome," Cindy said cheerfully. "Didn't you miss Fandom?"

"Certainly got better beer," Guy replied after a moment. "And I can finally watch a football game again."

"I'm glad I could welcome you back with something important," Cindy said. "I tried for the football, but the best I could do was the European kind, sorry."

"I'll forgive you this time," Guy replied. "Maybe you just don't have the right people to watch it with though."

"You mean anyone at all?" Cindy asked. "I tried peeking in at Caritas, but they've been all about hockey recently, so no dice there."

"It's off season now anyway. But when it's back on, you can come over and I'll explain it right." A beat. "I'll even supply the beer in case it doesn't make sense."

"Well, as long as you're promising beer, I think we can make this happen," Cindy said with a grin. "I might even be persuaded to bring nachos."

Bring, not make. Cindy could cook, she just made it a point to never do so if she could help it.
