With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Sam probably would have noticed the broad, shirtless man even if he hadn't been on the lookout for someone named Hercules. "Uh, hi there. Welcome to Fandom," he said, kind of enjoying not feeling intimidatingly tall for once.

"Why thank you!" Herc replied, heartily and happily. "I only wish that such an occasion would be marked by better weather. I thought I was coming to Virginia, not Seattle."

"I think everyone was hoping for nicer weather. It's been kinda Seattle-ish for a few days now," Sam said. "I hope you still feel welcomed, though. I'm Sam, by the way, Sam Winchester."

Hercules chuckled. "I've endured far worse than a little rain."

Hercules stuck his hand out for a shake. "Hercules. Just Hercules."

"Oh, good, I did find you," Sam said, shaking his hand. "I'm supposed to help you get settled and stuff, and answer any questions you have. It's a school thing, pairing teachers up, to make sure nothing happens to the new folks to make them run away screaming."

That got an even heartier laugh from Hercules. "It is not in my nature to run away from anything," he said. Except maybe commitment. "But it is good to know there is one around who I could ask questions of. I haven't ever taught in such a... formal setting, before."

"It's less formal than it looks, trust me," Sam said. "Have you taught before?"

"I have imparted important lessons as a... life mentor," Hercules said, using that term to describe his relationship with Amadeus. "But mostly, I have saved the world. Repeatedly."

Sam did his best not to laugh, but he couldn't help but grin. "Then you're definitely in the right place. I think there's a number of people here who could say that."

"Perhaps. But I'm probably older than them all!" Hercules said. "Tell me, Sam. Where do you come from? You're built like a fine warrior."

Sam grinned at that. "I'm from Kansas, although I live in New York City now, when I'm not here," he said. "My brother says I'm too tall, but I think I'm built just right."

"Your brother must be jealous," Hercules decided. He paused to think for a moment. "I have no other questions, at least not now. Do you have the e-mail or a MySpace for me to contact you?"

"Um, I don't have a MySpace account." Because he was far too geeky for that. "But I do have e-mail," Sam said, grabbing a piece of paper from one of tables to write it down. "If you need anything, just let me know, okay?"

Herc loved MySpace. But that was because he liked living in the past.

"I will, Sam," Hercules said with a grin. "You are a good guide, and I will put you to good use!"
