Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Oh! Neal knew that name.

"Neal Caffrey," he said, accepting the proffered hand and shaking it. "I think you're suppposed to be my teaching buddy."

With a little eye-roll on that last part, because seriously, teaching buddies? Come on, Fandom.

"That I am," she said a little proudly, because again, dork. But since she caught the eyeroll, she asked, "Do you not think you need one?"

Ooh. So she was a rules person. Good to know.

...And avoid.

"Well, Hermione," he said, turning on the charm juuust a bit. "All I know is that I'm here to mold young minds. And isn't that what it's all about?"

[personal profile] smartestone 2011-07-02 06:56 pm (UTC)(link)
OSomehow Hermione wasn't buying it. "Yes. But new teachers aren't always prepared for the young minds they're molding here, and often that comes second when the Fandom weirdness begins. Therefore, you get me," she explained.

He still didn't love the idea, but he could pretend to go along with it. It wasn't like he had to ask her for help or anything.

Unless he did. Ugh, and then he would end up right back working for Peter.

"I see," he said, nodding along and pretending to have a change of heart. Then, leaning in, he asked conspiratorily, "What kind of weirdness are we talking?"

"Invasions, things raining from the sky that should in no way be raining from the sky, animal transformations, transformations into... other things, people turning into children... We're currently traveling to different points in time all over the world," she said. "I can go on."

It took a lot to get Neal speechless, it really did. But that did it. Good job, Hermione.

He processed it for a moment. But then it clicked.

"That's why we're looking at ancient Greek architecture, right?" he verified. "'Cause I was sort of wondering why Maryland would have this particular style of buildings."

[personal profile] smartestone 2011-07-02 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
All right, she was sort of impressed that he recovered that fast. "That would be why," she confirmed. "You really picked out the architecture?"

Neal's eyes flashed with something that looked like amusement. "It's sort of my job," he allowed. "Apart from molding young minds."

[personal profile] smartestone 2011-07-02 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"Architecture," she repeated, like she wasn't really sure about that. Somehow she didn't see him at a desk drawing buildings.

"Recognizing architecture," he corrected her carefully. "And art in general."

And lots of things, but that was what Neal was going to say for right now.

[personal profile] smartestone 2011-07-02 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
She'd never known anyone who recognized buildings and art for a living, but she supposed that had to be a job for someone. "And what are you teaching here?"
charming_thief: (?: ummm what)

Re: Meet Your Teachers [SS2 2011]

[personal profile] charming_thief 2011-07-02 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, right. He'd forgotten that that would kind of be a giveaway as far hias actual "job" was concerned.

"Tricks, Cons and Bamboozles," Neal answered promptly, then gave Hermione a little smile. "And what do you teach?"

[personal profile] smartestone 2011-07-02 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"Uh huh," she said. "I'm teaching Social Activism this session."

Whoever paired them had had to have been going for comedy.

Preeeetty much. Neal could barely keep from snickering. Peter would love this chick.

"Hey, maybe we'll have overlapping students," he joked.

...Doubtful.

Re: Meet Your Teachers [SS2 2011]

[personal profile] smartestone 2011-07-02 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"If we do, I'd say those students are probably very confused," she decided. Or, you know, future inmates.

Re: Meet Your Teachers [SS2 2011]

[personal profile] charming_thief 2011-07-02 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"So you would say that there isn't an element of trickery to social activism?" he inquired pleasantly. "Someone with a handle on both could be pretty powerful."

A pretty powerful future inmate, Neal.

Re: Meet Your Teachers [SS2 2011]

[personal profile] smartestone 2011-07-02 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"There shouldn't be," she insisted. "Because it either means anyone using trickery to do something good is scamming people, which is wrong, or it means they'll probably end up using whatever their cause is for their own personal gain, and that is not only detestable but goes against the entire point of social activism."

Soapbox, meet Hermione. Hermione... well, you already know soapbox.

[personal profile] charming_thief 2011-07-02 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
"Or," Neal pointed out, in the tone of someone who is well-accustomed to giving other people little lightbulb moments, "a social activist could use creative measures to gain information on a cause he or she was fighting against."

Yes, Hermione, that extra "or she" in there was just for you. And soapbox.

Re: Meet Your Teachers [SS2 2011]

[personal profile] smartestone 2011-07-02 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
There wasn't exactly a lightbulb moment, but she did fold her arms and ask, "Creative measures such as? Do you have examples?"

Re: Meet Your Teachers [SS2 2011]

[personal profile] charming_thief 2011-07-02 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but he'd always thought fast.

"Well, let's say you heard about some scheme someone was running," Neal theorized. "You could sit around wishing you knew enough to stop it, or you could go in and pretend to be on their side for long enough to shut it down."

That was the name of the game when he worked with Peter, anyhow.

Re: Meet Your Teachers [SS2 2011]

[personal profile] smartestone 2011-07-03 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
She'd sort of done that. "All right, fine, but I'd call that less trickery and more... infiltration," she said. "And it doesn't have much to do with what I'll be teaching anyway."
charming_thief: (pos: nice to meet you)

[personal profile] charming_thief 2011-07-03 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Aaaaand Neal was right back to being smug. Thanks, Hermione.

"Oh?" he asked curiously. "My mistake. What sort of activism will you be teaching?"

Re: Meet Your Teachers [SS2 2011]

[personal profile] smartestone 2011-07-03 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
"Completely legal ways to bring about some kind of change that don't end in people getting into any kind of trouble whatsoever," she answered. Okay, there was one class that might toe the line a little bit but she already had the disclaimers for it mapped out in her head.

This time Neal did snicker, but only for a second before he schooled his expression into something more neutral, though still amused.

"Is that so," he said neutrally. "So... easy change, then."
