Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I haven't seen you lately," Hermione greeted her as she wandered over. "How was your first session?"

"Wonderful," Belle enthused happily. "I think I'm finally starting to settle in here, a little. How did your class go? Everyone passed with flying colors?"

"They did really well," she said, sounding a little surprised. "I suppose I thought that someplace like Fandom, where everyone goes rushing off into trouble at the very first sign of it, some of my lessons might meet with some resistance, but they all took to it. One of my students even told me it was one of the most useful classes he'd taken."

She was still a little happy about that.

"That's very high praise, especially somewhere like this, where the classes...are what they are," Belle said diplomatically. "They do seem to be a little on the, um...reckless side here, don't they?"

"That's a very good word for it," Hermione said, just a little dryly. "As soon as anything bad happens, half the island has to try and fight it. Of course, I haven't seen anything bad happen in the last couple months, but I doubt they've changed that much."

"There were those spiders," Belle noted, a little dubiously. "I've looked into some of the history of what's happened here, and it sounds like...well, it's a very good thing that the students are capable enough that they don't hurt themselves by rushing off, at least, isn't it?"

"The spiders weren't as bad as it can get," she explained. Of course she'd also blown one up in her apartment, so it was possible her view was just slightly skewed. "And you are right on that. The ones who rush off into things are usually the ones who are good enough to accomplish something. Though I'm very glad we have a good clinic staff."

"Naturally," Belle agreed. "And a very good library!" she added proudly. "It's better to be informed about what they're rushing into, right? I mean, no use fighting something with a sword if it's shielded and you don't know it!"

"Exactly!" She was so glad someone understood! "I have no problems fighting something, but I'd rather know what I'm facing rather than going in wand blazing against something I don't even know what it is."

"That approach doesn't end well for the one doing the blazing, in my experience," Belle noted a little sadly, thinking of Gaston. Poor, stupid Gaston. "And besides, some of us are better suited to turning pages than firing muskets. I'd rather help someone find the answer so they could do their job than try to fight by myself."

There was one bit in there that definitely caught Hermione's attention. "Muskets?"

"It's a long-barreled shotgun," Belle supplied. "Where I'm from they're mostly used for hunting." For sport, and not food, which bothered her.

"No, I know what they are," she assured her. "It just never occurred to me to ask when you're from before." Not a lot of muskets getting used these days, from what she knew.

"Handwavey year at the end of the 18th century," Belle supplied with a quick smile. "I guess there are a lot of people, er, out of their time here, right?"

"Hermione nodded. "You can say that. I'm from 1999, myself."

"Not quite the same adjustment," Belle said with a little laugh. "I mean, there was electricity by then, wasn't there?"

"Definitely. Though at my old school nothing electronic would work, if that helps?" she tried.

"Because of magic?" she asked curiously, recalling what Hermione had told her about her world.

She nodded. "There's just too much of it in the air, everything goes haywire. Which honestly felt a little cruel after finding out that I could order any book I wanted online."
