fandomhigh | Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I like your mane," Pinkie Pie told Reno without preamble. "It's all fluffy!"

"Fluff-Wha?"

Okay, the talking crazy-assed looking animal-thing, Reno could get his head around. It wasn't like he hadn't had run-ins with lion-dogs with ass-fires before he'd even come to Fandom, after all. But fluffy? What in the world about Reno was fluffy?

"... The hell, you say?"

"I do," Pinkie said. "It's all --" she puffed out her cheeks, which somehow managed to make her own curly pink main stand briefly on end. "It's very fun!"

"I guess I can live with fun," Reno decided, now contemplating just how much Gil this thing might drop if he beat it senseless with his stun baton. Probably none. Damn Fandom for that, anyhow. "But fluffy... We don't go callin' my hair fluffy, yo. Makes the kids think I'm soft or somethin'."

Which any kid who had Reno as a teacher for more than one lecture probably knew already.

He reminded her a little bit of Rainbow Dash. "Oh, I'm sorry! I could call it 'spikey' instead. Or just 'cool', if you want."

He even had a cutie mark! ... Kind of. A tattoo of a drunk baby bird on his ass was close enough, right?

Not that Pinkie would ever get to see it.

"Spikey, cool, whatever. I ain't gonna deny either of those, yo." He squinted at the pony in front of him, leaning forward a bit to get a better look. Huh. "I'm gonna go out on a limb here an' say you gotta be new, yo."

Call it a hunch.

"That's a really good guess!" Pinkie was way more impressed than it merited. "I just arrived today from Ponyville."

"Ponyville, huh?" Reno tilted his head a bit. Yeah, a place called 'Ponyville' didn't surprise him all that much. Especially since he'd been a student back on that day where half the population of the island had turned into brightly-colored ponies, too.

Ah, Fandom.

"Never heard of it. Always did kinda suck at geography, though. Teacher or student?"

"Teacher," Pinkie said. "It's my very first time, though. I hope I'm good at it!"

"Well, I gotta say, you ain't lackin' in enthusiasm," mused Reno. "An' it's kinda hard to screw it up around here, yo. What you teachin', uh..."

Squint.

"Little pink thing?"

"Pinkie," she offered. "I'm teaching how to throw amazing parties!"

Oh, this was going to be good.

"Yeah? An' what would you say is the staple of an amazing party, Pinkie?"

Having already gone through this with Barney, Pinkie knew just how to answer. "Friends. And cake."

"More friends than cake," Reno decided, smirking a bit. "Hell, I've had a few parties with no cake at all, yo. You find shit to do to keep it interesting, though."

Case in point, he lifted his water bottle and took a long swig of water.

He kind of figured 'conversation with insane pink pony' warranted a 'chug' in his one-man H2O drinking game.

"That's true. But cake can make it tastier."

"Yeah, an' so can Jello shots, yo." Reno grinned outright, then. "Added bonus? They wiggle, yo."

... Wiggly things were more fun. So there.

"They do!" Pinkie started bouncing and wobbling about herself. "Wiggle-wiggle, wiggle-wiggle -- what are you shooting them at, though?"

Reno was now biting the inside of his cheek to keep from just laughing outright. Now she was managing to remind him of his ferret.

... Pinkie and Mako in the same hemisphere was kind of a terrifying thought, when it all came right down to it.

"Into your mouth, of course," he replied, with a smoothness to his voice that held no hint to how close he was to just completely cracking up. "Where else would you shoot your Jello?"

"Oh, that sounds like loads of fun! Way better than shooting them at birds or apples or warring buffaloes or parasprites or dragons." Those being the things she'd thought of to shoot jello at. "Of course, all those things are much better dealt with with a little bit of music and good humor! Well, except for the apples. They don't have any ears."

"And I ain't never heard of a parasprite," Reno noted. "That somethin' you mix with vodka?"

Or was that just Sprite? Reno was never really big on mixers.

"They're little bugs that everypony thinks are really cute at first until they EAT EVERYTHING IN SIGHT," Pinkie explained. "The only way to get rid of them is to get them to follow you into the Everfree Forest by playing enticing music at them."

"Huh. We just called those neighbors, back in Midgar," Reno mused.

Or SOLDIER. They had pretty notable appetites all on their own.

"You live next to a bunch of parasprites? And they haven't eaten your house, yet?" Pinkie was seriously impressed.

"Eeeh, yes and no," Reno replied, wrinkling his nose and contemplating the positives and negatives to explaining Meteorfall to a pink pony. "I don't live there no more, anyhow. Fandom Island's been home for a while now, yo."
