With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Having been a mouse for a short bit of time and having studied the strange deer already present on the island, Jane was quite proud of her ability to take the sight of a pink pony fairly in stride.

In fact, she just couldn't refuse the urge to think herself quite clever with her remark. "My, now that's a horse of different colour."

Pinkie turned to look over her shoulder. "Really? Where?"

"Oh, goodness! You talk!"

Somehow, Jane hadn't quite seen that part coming, which, in retrospect, she would consider a little foolish of herself.

Pinkie was going to get very used to that reaction, today.

"And I sing, too! And dance! But sometimes not everypony likes that very much." Stupid buffalo. "I'm Pinkie Pie! Nice to meet you!"

"Er," said Jane, at first, as she needed a moment to remember how to blink. And once she remembered that, everything fell into place and she gave the pony a slight curtsey, questioning whether or not she really just gave a pony curtsey. "I'm Jane Porter," she offered. "A pleasure to meet you, as well, Miss, er, Pie. You must excuse me; I'm afraid I'm not used to singing and dancing ponies where I am from."

Her hand, however, was twitching to fight down the urge to slip her notebook out from her pocket.

Pinkie wouldn't mind. One of her best friends was a researcher.

"Call me Pinkie!" she said. "Miss Pie is my mom, and all she does is farm rocks all day."

"Goodness, but that doesn't sound like much fun, though I suppose it does rather make sense for an equine," Jane noted after a moment. "Pinkie it is, then, but then you must call me Jane, of course."

"Sure tootin'!" said Pinkie. Sometimes even she wasn't sure what was coming out of her mouth. "It's really nice to meet you, Jane! And farming rocks is no fun at all, that's why I moved away to Ponyville, and then my sister moved to Canterlot and now she's a classical cellist."
