Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Sort of. I spent a lot of time in El Salvador while my parents were helping to build a church in a rural community. It was really nice there, except for all the bugs," said Ryan.

"That's understandable," Bruce said. "So you've already seen some of the world. It's always good to get that kind of experience when you're our age."

Especially since the island was apparently on a bit of a world tour itself. Having some experience with that in a less magical manner might help the adjustment.

"I've seen more of the rest of the world than the U.S. itself at this point," said Ryan. "Speaking of which... where is this island, exactly? I tried looking it up on a map and I couldn't find it."

"Generally speaking, off the coast of Maryland, next to Lexington Park," Bruce said. Yes, he was well aware that this wasn't the coast of Maryland right now. Actually, he couldn't peg where they were at all, but it definitely wasn't a viking civilization anymore.

"Generally speaking? Just what have I gotten myself into?" asked Ryan.

"A real learning experience," Bruce said. "With amazing people and some events you won't see anywhere else. If you have any questions about anything you see or hear about over the next couple days - and you will - feel free to ask me."

Yes, this was how Bruce played nice with the more normal kids here. He was prepared to answer almost anything truthfully, but he felt it made a better impression if they had enough exposure to the weirdness to believe him. Unless they very literally asked for it.

"Sounds like this place will be a real adventure," said Ryan, raising an eyebrow. She figured he was holding something back, but as long as this place didn't have any bloodthirsty insects, she was willing to give it a try.

Not insects, no. At least not right now. "Nothing you won't be able to handle, I'm sure. I figure that if you can survive the jungle, you can survive a small town like this."

"I should be fine, then. I can handle a lot," said Ryan. "Guess I should just hope that things aren't too boring around here."

"That shouldn't be a problem," Bruce said. "You'll learn that quickly enough."
