Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Cassel wasn't exactly thrilled with having another big sibling considering the two he already had made his life miserable, but he supposed that this Jeremy guy couldn't possibly be worse than Phillip and Barron.

He managed to find Jeremy in the crowd, but was displeased to see that he was gloveless. He didn't know why he was surprised; he seemed to be the only person that managed to wear a pair here.

"You must be Jeremy," Cassel said, automatically noting the expensive umbrella and marking the guy down as having money. "I'm Cassel."

No, he didn't offer his hand in greeting.

"Hey," Jeremy grinned at him. "That's right, Jeremy Darling, at your service. Welcome to Fandom, Cassel."

Now that he knew how it was pronounced, he was comfortable saying it. And he did offer the other boy his hand. It was only polite!

"Thanks," Cassel said, pretending not to see the offered hand. "I'm guessing the sibling thing is equaled to the school welcoming committee I've had in other schools only with a more lovable term?"

Jeremy's eyebrows twitched when his hand got ignored, but lowered it all the same. Not everyone had had the same kinds of manners drilled into them as he had (even if he was kind of random about remembering to act according to them) and he was cool with that.

"Basically, yeah," he replied, tempering his grin more into a smile. "And also because this place is... It takes a little getting used to."

"I'm beginning to notice that," he admitted. "It can't possibly be too awful though, considering it seems like a lot of people seem...cheerful."

"Well, we're all pretty laidback around here."

When they weren't being invaded. And nothing weird was raining down from the sky. And they were all themselves.

But, details.

"So where are you from, man?" Jeremy asked. "I need to sorta gauge your background so I know what I'm working with."

"New Jersey," he shared. "I'm not one of those guido type people from MTV though, I swear."

"You don't look the type either, trust me," Jeremy assured him. "So, you're from this planet. That's good, at least I don't need to explain the US to you." He paused, thoughtful. "Although we're actually near Atlantis now."

Reassuring, he was not.

Cassel lifted an eyebrow. "Shouldn't Atlantis be...wetter?"

"Not when it hasn't yet sunk," Jeremy replied, far too cheerfully. He couldn't help it, he found it very easy to just go with Fandom's flow. "So I guess we're in the past, too. Lesson one: the island moves about."

"Ah." Well that was strange. "Moves about through space and time?"

"Got it in one," Jeremy nodded. "It's kind of an, I don't know, crossroads between all kinds of realities and universes? This summer it's apparently decided to visit some."

Cassel was silent for a couple moments as he tried to decide how he felt about that. He could tell Jeremy wasn't lying, but all of this was hard to believe.

"So how did you react when someone said that to you?" It would help him decide what to do.

"I thought it was the world's most epic hazing for the first two weeks," Jeremy shared easily, nodding. "So, dude, I know it's weird. We weren't even moving back then."

Cassel nodded, even though he still looked contemplative. "I do believe you. It's just weird as hell."

Some part of him wondered how it was scientifically possible, but scientists never figured out why curse workers were the way they were. It wasn't so hard to believe when he compared the two things.

"And it just gets weirder." Jeremy was lucky Cassel wasn't freaking out, because he was seriously bad at not just laying it all out there. "Sometimes you can turn into -- well, anything. Other people, animals..."

That actually caught Cassel's attention since, well, that's what he could do. "Other people turn into stuff? Like by themselves or with help?"

"I think it might be the island?" Jeremy offered. "But yeah. My sis was a dog for a while, and there was a weekend where most people where not who they're supposed to be. It's kind of a regular thing around here, apparently."

"Wow." Cassel was pleased to hear that didn't sound like a transformation worker's doing. Surely the blowback of transforming a whole island's worth of people would kill somebody. "You know I'm sure this is gonna be a lot weirder for me when I actually see it."

He was a very hands on sort of person. Pun intended.

"Probably," Jeremy shrugged with a little smile that was a little apologetic. "But dude, since you're taking it so calmly now? I doubt you're gonna be running away screaming even once you actually get to see what it's all about. By next newbie day you'll be used to it."

"I pride myself on my ability to adapt." That was the mark of a good conman, after all. "And if I do freak out the school assigned you to keep me from flipping out too badly."

"Well, I live up in 522 and I can give you my number so you can call me if you start freaking out," Jeremy suggested. "The least I can do is take you to Caritas to chill out. They don't card. ...Alhough they do have a zombie band which might wig you out more, but at least there's booze!"

"Zombies," Cassel repeated, shaking his head. "I wish I could say I was surprised but..."

"But on a moving island that changes people into animals and whatever," Jeremy filled in, nodding, "it just goes with the territory and is the least surprising thing, yeah, I know."
