Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

With all the rain the island had seen during the week, everyone had been hoping for a sudden turn to nice weather for the welcome picnic. But as the crew from the school started to set up for the picnic, the sky got darker and darker, and by the time everything was ready, it had started to steadily rain. As tempting as it was to move everything inside, there just wasn't anywhere in the school for so many people to gather at once, and since it was still comfortably warm outside, extra measures were taken to ensure that the picnic could go on as scheduled. Tents were set up to cover the information tables, the food, and most of the tables and chairs, and umbrellas had been gathered, ready for use by anyone who wanted more personal protection against the weather. It didn't look like the rain would be letting up any time soon.

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

The list of roommate assignments was located in a prime spot on one of the tables. Current students who had been assigned new rooms and/or roommates had been handwavily informed of the change.

One second, there was no one there, then Bart was peering over the list, brushing his hair out of his eyes. "Kenzi." He read her name slowly. "Huh, wasn't that the name of that girl who was..."

He looked up and saw her standing there. "Oh, yeah! You! Hi." He waved at her, more enthusiastically than he probably intended. "I guess we're going to be rooming together."

Bart didn't understand what he did wrong. Maybe this was some sort of humor he didn't understand. Maybe this was a strange custom from her home. Maybe...

"How big is the closet? Does it have a bed? How about a TV?"

Hunh. It occurred to Kenzi that she might actually get her roomie to sleep in the closet, if she played this right. "You know, I think a TV is a reasonable accommodation. Also, a mini-fridge, how do you feel about that?"

Kate slapped a name tag on and perched on a nearby table to look out for some guy called Ryan. Maybe he'd hold out longer than her last roommate.

There was no guy named Ryan this time around. But there was a girl named Ryan who was looking around for her new roommate. She wasn't about to make any promises to stick around, either.

"Are you Kate?" she asked, spotting the nametag. "I'm Ryan. I guess we'll be rooming together?"

Okay, not a guy. The name was misleading. It was really her own fault for jumping to conclusions based on a name alone.

"Assuming no other other Ryan Clark's... Looks like it." Kate offered a small smile, and spread her hands, "Don't you feel welcomed?" Mm, rain.

"At least it's not snow?" said Ryan. "It is sort of nice. I grew up in the rain forest of South America while my parents were helping the poor, so this is almost like being back there."

Kate shrugged, filing away that little piece of information. "Give it a week, maybe there'll be a blizzard." It would not shock her at all. Weather was all whacked out in her world anyway.

"I've been here a few weeks, so... Picked my bed already. Sorry about that."

"Ooh, we actually get beds?" asked Ryan with a chuckle. "No problem. A few weeks ago I was sleeping on the floor of a mud hut in Kenya so having any bed will feel like paradise. Do we actually get pillows, too?"

"And sheets and desks and all sorts." It was more space and furniture than Kate'd had in her entire life. Growing up on the move did get you used to sleeping anywhere you could. "I still find it easier sleeping on the floor." It was more familiar than anything else around here.

"Now it's starting to sound like a five-star hotel," said Ryan, nodding in approval. She certainly didn't get a desk when she was staying in a hospital room.

"Are there any problems with bugs on this island?" she asked. "Because I really do not like bugs at all. There were some horrible ones in the rain forest."

Being involved in the glamorous world of Hollywood, Miley was familiar with a lot of weird names. But Surreal SaDiablo? That was among the weirdest.

She peered around, wondering what kind of person she was even supposed to be looking for.

Juliet was wrapped in a stylish Betsy Johnson raincoat as she waited in the roommate area. It only did a so-so job at keeping her dry, but it looked amazing.

She wasn't exactly pleased to have to give up part of the closet again, but she'd decided to do her best to make Cassel feel welcome.

Cassel had guessed that Juliet was related to Jeremy based on the last name, but the fact she was also wearing something fashionable and expensive cemented that fact. He wasn't exactly bothered by having a girl roommate; he figured that some private schools were progressive like that. He was equally wary of roommates, guy or girl. He had gotten lucky with Sam at his last school and he didn't think that kind of luck would strike twice.

"Juliet?" Cassel asked, looking questioning even though he knew it was her. She looked a lot like her brother. "I'm Cassel."

He was nice enough to pronounce his name before anybody else had to try to make an attempt.

"So it is a boy name," Juliet said with a small smile, missing brain-to-mouth filter on full display. "I couldn't tell. Hi, Cassel! My last roomie was a boy too and it was fine. It's good to meet you."

"Nice to meet you too," Cassel said, unsurprised by the confusion over his name. Damn his mother and her dramatic tendencies. "I've never had a girl roommate before but I'm guessing it's not too different from having a guy one."

"Not as long as we remember to knock and everything," Juliet agreed, sizing Cassel up. Cute in a scruffy way, she decided, and the gloves in summer must be a punk thing. "But how do you feel about closet space? I haven't had a roommate in a while, so I spread out a little bit."

Because that was so very hospitable.

"I don't have that much stuff." He did tend to tape stuff he wanted to keep secret at the top of the ceiling in the closet but he wasn't about to share that. "You can take up all the closet space you want."

"New Jersey," Cassel shared. "I've spent a lot of time in New York though."

The fact that Juliet was from a place that he recognized and she still didn't wear gloves was a little unnerving. He was beginning to think his New York wasn't the same one this girl was talking about.

Ew, Jersey. On the bright side, at least he knew where New York was, which counted as being practically neighbors in Fandom terms.

"Where in New York?" Juliet asked carefully. "We live on the Upper East Side."
