Criminal Justice Open Classroom, Saturday

The Tick is at his desk, ready to greet any parent, sibling, guardian, cousin, uncle, aunt, grandparent, employer, mentor, pet, or anybody else who could roughly be defined as "family" of his students. He is wearing a tie. The Tick recognizes that he looks a little different from the other teachers around here, so he bought what he will assure anyone is a hypnotic tie that makes people ignore the fact that he is a very large man in blue tights with antennae sticking out of his head.

For the record, the tie is not actually hypnotic.

"Students! Parents and/or other assorted family of students! I welcome you to Criminal Justice! I am Professor Tick, and I teach!"

[OOC: Massive apologies to anyone attempting to interact with me in here. SBC chose today to have issues all over the area. I will be here all day, though, unless Tick sees something really shiny.]

Rory and Emily are walking past Tick's classroom. "Oh, and um, this is the Criminal Justice classroom," Rory says, waving a hand vaguely. "Um, I TA for the teacher, but I don't think he's here..." She glances in, and upon seeing that he actually is there, attempts to rush Emily along.

"Rory!" Emily exclaims. "I want to see your classroom, at least. The room is open, can't hurt to have a look" she mutters, grabbing Rory's hand. "Although why you are a TA for a Criminal Justice class I'll never understand."

Tick saw the Gilmores by the door. "Rory! Hello! And who is this?"

"It seemed like a good opportunity," Rory murmurs, looking pained as Emily drags her in.

"Um. Hello, sir," she says, smiling nervously. "Um, this is my grandmother, Emily Gilmore. Grandma, this is Professor...Tick."

"Hello, Mrs. Gilmore! Rory has been a great help in my class. She's a very bright girl!"

Emily's eyes could not be open wider if you taped them to her forehead. She looks at Tick, "Are you dressed up for Halloween early too?"

Rory nods vehemently at Tick from slightly out of Emily's view.

Tick saw Rory nodding just after he mentioned the tie (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fandomhigh/290220.html?thread=14332588#t14332588). "Err, I'm just kidding, of course! Heh."

Rory makes a face at Emily and frantically motions in a way that should convey to Tick that her grandmother is very judgemental.

Tick read the motions correctly and decided to watch Rory more closely for any clues. He would have to Tread Carefully.

"Oh, no, ma'am. I'm only wearing the tie because it's a special occasion." The Tick smiled.

Emily laughs. "Oh, wit is such a lost art. That's very funny, Mr. Tick. What an unusual last name you have. Is that Dutch?"

The Tick felt that his tie wasn't working as advertised. He'd have to think on his feet. "Why, yes, it is! A very proud Dutch name, ma'am."

Rory smiles and gives him a thumbs up.

She mouths "Sidekick," and frantically shakes her head. And then "TA," and nods.

Emily does not see Rory's communication with Tick, and blissfully carries on. "I love the Dutch. Those tulips are so precious. And I'm glad you are enjoying Rory in your class, we've always known she was very special. But how exactly does she serve as your TA? I didn't know she knew that much about Criminal Justice!"

"Compared to how much there is to know about Justice, who does know anything? The Supreme Court does, sure, but there are seven of them to pool their knowledge!

Rory helps out with directing the class discussion. And grading. Egads, is she ever a superhero when it comes to grading!"

Rory actually blushes at the praise, and grins.

"Oh, it's no big deal," she says bashfully. "And it's fun, anyway. The grading, I mean. It's not every day I get to use fourteen different pens."

"Oh, it's a big deal! One test I tried grading by myself nearly killed me!" Tick glanced at Rory and quickly added, "Uh, metaphorically speaking, that is."

"I think I understand. And Rory is certainly capable of succeeding at whatever she puts her mind to; I'm glad she has been given the opportunity to grow here. What type of material are you covering in the class?"

"Since this is an introductory-level class, it's largely discussion on what these kids' views on crime and justice area. They come from really different backgrounds, so it's really pretty interesting!"

Tick pondered for a moment, trying to normalize his recent classes a little. "We've been looking at real-world cases recently. A couple weeks ago, we were talking about this weird case in Arizona, and another one in Colorado. It's really pretty wacky, the stuff that happens out there!"

"Ah yes, this is quite an International school. And I can only imagine what kind of cases you were discussing," Emily frowns. "People out there still think it is the Wild West. You can see why our family prefers the East Coast."

"From what I've seen on this Boat of Life, the whole darn world is pretty wild. The key is to find which current is the best for you, whether you're the kind of person who likes the roaring rapids, or if you like the gentle stream. You're just trying not to fall out and get soaked!"

"I suppose you are correct, Mr. Tick. Well, it has been lovely meeting you. Thank you for your time. Come along Rory," she turns to Rory, heading for the door.
