Hero Management- Monday- Period 3- Class #6

Once again class was held in the Danger Shop today, which looked a bit like the clinic. Not exactly like it, but it had the same clinc-y feel to it. There were also supplies set out, so the students could probably figure out what they were doing today.

"We've gone over how to prepare, how to try and talk the hero out of doing something stupid or at least pointing out flaws in their plan, and it's always possible that despite your best efforts, something will go wrong. Most commonly, these things will be injuries. Hopefully it's nothing more than simple scrapes and bruises, but broken bones might happen, or a person might be knocked unconscious, and someone has to know what to do in a case like that," said Hermione, who began passing out a series of handouts. "Conditions might not always be ordeal, so you might not have proper supplies or time to treat something properly, in which case you may have to improvise. And for today's class, let's ignore that you might be able to heal something with powers, or with spells or potions. What I'm giving you now is just basic information, and I'm not a professional. If you can take a first aid class, I recommend it. There's no such thing as being too prepared. I also want to state that if an injury does occur, as soon as you can get proper medical attention, do so. Don't try to hide any injuries because you might get into trouble. Better punished than sorry.

"If someone is injured, stay calm. It might be difficult, especially if there's blood involved, or if the injury is otherwise... unpleasant somehow," she said carefully. "Check for responsiveness, and make sure you're treating the right thing. If someone is still breathing, there's no need to try CPR on them, for instance, not even if you saw them do it that way on television. Now, I want you to go over the information you've been given, and then I'm going to have you pair up to practice making a splint. You have the handout and can use the available supplies, and I'm here if you have any questions."

"More as a questions of quantity, vs. quality, really." Scully paused. "Could you heal 200 people in a day, without becoming exhausted, for instance? And if you did, how much attention would that draw to you?"

"I can be overwhelmed," Raven said reluctantly. She'd pushed herself too hard in Agio and almost paid the price there. "But such situations are very rare."

"Granted," Scully said, watching her hand instead of Raven's face. "But... I didn't like watching you hurt yourself for Triela. Or Karla doing the same thing. I think knowing more would help." She added, "But it is a huge commitment. And I don't know how much you like school in the first place."

"I will have a year between when I graduate and when Karla does," Raven said as she wrapped the bandages around Dana's arm. "That is not much time to learn the ways of medicine. And the pain I feel when I heal, it is a price I am willing to pay, I have told you that. I accept it."

"No, it isn't," Scully had to admit, then said, curious, "You're going to Karla's world when she graduates? I don't think I knew that."

"She asked me to be her Court Healer some time ago," Raven said as she finished the splint. She was having some doubts about that path now, given what she'd seen of the future. And there was Jono to consider as well, though teleporting made that such a huge issue.

Scully nodded slowly, thinking. "They can probably train you in their traditions there, anyway. It's not all about the physical healing." She suddenly smiled wryly. "Or I would be working in a hospital somewhere, not doing research on causes of death."

"That is an unpleasant thing to study," Raven said, unable to hide a frown.

"It is, but it's fascinating, too," Scully said, unfazed. "And necessary. Both for stopping the spread of disease, and catching criminals. It's more impersonal, but... I'm good at science."

"Catching criminals?" Raven said, suppressing a shudder at the thought of examining a dead body. "You mean by determining how someone died?"

"And when, and where, if the body was moved, who might have touched it-- there's many many factors," Scully said, gesturing with her splinted fingers, then blinking at them.
