Computers 101, 1st Period [Friday]

"Hey guys, and ladies," Sam said, once everyone had arrived to the computer lab. The computers were off again today, and Sam was at the front of the room with a cardboard box next to him on the desk. "I know that so far we've been talking about computers as the things in front of us, but these days, computers are a lot more than just the machines we have here. Laptops and tablets and even phones can do a lot of the things computers can do, and there have been handheld computer games for quite a while."

Reaching into the box, Sam pulled out a keychain-sized toy. "This is a virtual pet. Just like a real pet, you have to feed it, clean up after it, and play with it to keep it happy. If you don't keep it happy, well, you lose, and you have to start over again with a new pet. I'm going to pass the box around, and I want you all to take one. Play around with it to see how it works, and try to go through as few pets as possible before we meet again next week."

There were a lot of different animals to choose from, because Sam thought they were all pretty adorable.

Faramir was staring at the tiny thing in his hand, failing to see the use of it. "If one would wish to take care of an animal, would it not be better to find a real one to raise?" he asked, to no one in particular. While Baru was not a pet, he had managed to keep the horse alive for more than merely a week.

"Unfortunately, not everyone can have a real pet to raise. Some of us are lucky," Sam said, thinking of Scout. "But some people live in places where they can't have any animals. And not everyone can be trusted with the care of a living creature." Like, you know, most teenage boys who'd never had a horse or anything.

Caroline had never had a digital pet before and holy crap, the little creature in the keychain totally loved her.

And wanted food. Lots of food. Too much food.

"Please can we not turn into some evil-winged devil spawn because you beeped annoyingly for food every twenty seconds?" Caroline hoped requests worked, but there was no way of knowing for sure how to keep the creature from dying too fast.

Alexander frowned at the small purple thing (http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ9N4fZZ_nuC4Ulj0QGyZAmGSYUg5SE1O5NerR9_zJxHaOUnb317A&t=1) in his hand and tentative pushed a few buttons on it.

"Zounds," he breathed, "I think I killed it alrea--wait, no, there it goes. Is that...er..."

Yes, Alexander, it was defecating.

What were the point of these things, again?

Seifer was not going to hold this against Sam, not at all.

He figured the radio would let everyone know about it in the morning.

In the meantime, he randomly grabbed one and started it up.

And if he named his new little lizard pal Zell, well, no one needed to know.

Who's almost as adorable as the virtual pets.

Bobby was totally adorable nigh unto a virtual pet...but he wondered what would happen if the cabin leaked or something and the pet got wet and then all the electronics fried. Would he fail? He didn't want to fail.

It totally had the koala giga pet, omg. I loved that thing. SO MUCH BETTER THAN MY BROTHER'S TAMAGACHI!!
