Life's a Circus, Friday, Second Period

"Hey everyone," Dick said as the class gathered in the middle of the typical Danger Room circus tent. He was holding a box of popcorn. "This week, we're going to learn a little bit about taking care of the animals. And our helper today is going to be Bessie the elephant." Yes, Dick named the imaginary elephant that was walking over to him. He pet Bessie's trunk and continued talking.

"The most important thing to remember once again is safety. And not just your own, even if you do want to be careful when a five ton animal is stomping around. But you also have to treat the animals right. And that means feeding them, cleaning them, making sure they're healthy, and that's without trying to teach them tricks. If one of your animals gets sick because you didn't treat them right, it could die."

"So let's make it interesting today," Dick said. "For the second half of class, you can all ride an elephant. The Danger Shop can manage that. But you have to earn the right by putting in some hard work. You can wash an elephant with a hose - but your elephant may spray water back at you with his or her trunk. Or you can clean up a pile of manure so that it can be processed and sold commercially for gardens. Yes, that's what circuses do with that. Do either of those for the first half of class and you get to spend the second half on Bessie or one of her friends."

"Or you can just hang around the seats and talk, but fair warning, a moddable clown will be in that area and may try to talk. Or at least try to give you balloon animals."

Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, dung.

Elephants, Sam decided, could be as gross as boys could.

Annie maybe blinked a lot.

And decided she was going to judge anyone who cleaned up after the elephants. Ew.

Sam went for washing the elephant, naturally.

Which resulted in more having a water fight with the elephant, but, hey, it eventually got clean.

Once she finished staring at it, Cara went with washing the elephant.

Wet leathers, fun.

Mercy didn't mind getting wet or dirty. So, she shoveled some dung for a while, then went for the washing and figured she'd pretty much end up washed off herself. Luckily the Danger Shop elephants hadn't been programmed to be bothered by the smell of a coyote.

Jocelyn would wash the damn elephant. She was a Shadowhunter, dammit, she wasn't going to pick up fake manure and have that get back to Valentine.

She ended up soaked and trying to wring her hair out.

"...Why do I have a feeling Gibby would love this class?" Freddie remarked to himself, as he went to wash the elephant.

Juliet did not do hard work under any circumstances, and she'd ridden on an elephant at somebody's bat mitzvah a few years before anyhow.

If the cost of a day in the sun watching her classmates work was a few moments pretending to be amused by rubber noses and floppy shoes -- she'd pay that, and consider it fair.

Annie would be washing the elephant, yes. And she would also end up soaked. But really, after the last couple weeks in Tokyo, how was this any different from any other day?

Given the choice between definitely shoveling crap and possibly getting sprayed by an elephant Richie would choose elephant washing every time.

He'd dry, eventually. And it wasn't like he didn't have other clothes to change into after class.

"Giddyup, Bessie! Come on, you can do better'n that!"

Yes, Sam was trying to talk her elephant into galloping. Because what this class totally needed was a stampeding pachyderm.

Riding an elephant wasn't that much different than riding a horse. Just a lot higher.

This? Was a lot of fun! Mercy was definitely enjoying her elephant ride.

This elephant ride would possibly be a lot more fun if you got to stand up instead of sit. So she figured she'd give that a try.

As she went along her days in Fandom, Annie began writing herself a mental checklist of things she never thought she'd have done, and then immediately checking them off. Today's item was "Ride a simulated elephant."

It seemed much higher from up here than it probably was, too. Probably.

When Richie called Mac he was going to leave out the bit where the elephant wasn't real and just say that he'd gotten to ride an elephant. Hopefully the response wouldn't be "I once spent a month riding elephants in the late 1700s in India." It probably would be though.

But whatever. This was still pretty awesome.

I've ridden elephants before! It was fun! Way more sway-y than riding a horse.

I assume it would also give you a bigger power rush. All of those people like ants. And you have a living tank with a really long nose.....

It's probably a good thing I've never had a chance to ride an elephant.
