Cupcake War Crimes, Week 2 [Tuesday, Period 1]

Once again the Home Ec classroom was looking very Home Ec-y with cupcake supplies taking up most of the available counter space at the workstations. And once again the two unlikely alien boys were at the front of the room ready to teach. Or at least wax poetic about cupcakes.

“You came back,” Stark said, pleased to see that at least some students had in fact returned for their second class. “Welcome back.”

“We were worried we scared you guys off,” Anders confided with a lopsided grin but not the trademark Solo lopsided grin. “Okay, just a little.” On his part, anyway. If Stark had been more worried, he wasn’t going to say so, and anyway, he figured it was a legitimate concern.

“Some of you guys,” he went on, “had an interesting take on the meatloaf cupcakes that got brought up last week, so I can’t wait to see what you have to say about --” He uncovered a plate of what looked less like cupcakes and more like fancy sandwiches with flags stuck in them. If sandwiches contained entire chunks of corn, cob and all, that was.

Anders gave everybody a Yeeeeeeeeeah look. “These.”

Stark eyed the so-called cupcakes warily, then turned his attention back to the students. “Yes. These. Not even really cupcakes. Are they?” It was quite clear from his expression which side of that particular debate Stark fell on. But then he took his cupcakes very seriously.

“Personally,” Anders put in, “I feel like they’re closer to sandwiches. Only . . .” He squinted at the plate of pulled-pork . . . somethings. “With cupcakes instead of bread. Sketchy, if you ask me. But how about you guys debate that for a few minutes, and then experiment with making some cupcakes of your own?”

“We left you many choices of ingredients,” Stark said. “For when you start baking.”

Including some incredibly dubious ones. It was a test, okay? To see if students would really risk that or not.

[OCD is coming! up.]

Raven was going nowhere near the pork, turkey, or tuna, of course.

She was making an effort to follow the directions closely. She'd learned the hard way with Karla that improvisation was not good for cooking.

Having spent a lot of time in the kitchen at Café Fina, Lion-o had no problem with a basic cupcake recipe. He also took some tuna as he gathered up his ingredients, but that was for snacking on while the cupcakes were in the oven.

Alex was going to attempt to make some ordinary cupcakes (no meat products, thank you very much), but he didn't have much previous baking experience--some box mixes, and he'd even managed to screw those up a time or two. So he was being very careful to follow the directions, and even then he spent the entire time hoping he was doing this right.

How he managed to get batter on his forehead was anyone's guess.

Yes. She really was. Sam went with a vanilla cupcake and then spent several minutes staring at the batter in the cups trying to work out how to best put the various meats in the center.

She was this close to skipping the baking part entirely and just eating all the ingredients as is.

Jeremy... had no idea what he was doing. He didn't really have the focus to be reading the recipe too closely. As a result, he was pretty much dumping the ingredients in at random, though he was avoiding the less cupcake-y things.

Hopefully he wouldn't miraculously manage to set anything on fire.

Thanks to his time in the diner, Bod felt fairly confident that he'd be able to make passable cupcakes. He wasn't going to use any of the meat just yet because he thought that was a bit too advanced but regular cupcakes with a lemon frosting sounded good.

Lindsay wasn't much of a baker, but she had seen her mother make cupcakes enough times to make an attempt. At least she knew enough not to use meat products as ingredients.

While Caroline hadn't felt much like talking, she could do this cupcake baking thing as it went well with her strange desire to feed people. But, ew, not tuna.

Or pork.

Her eyes just kept getting wider at the choices until she finally settled on doing something completely normal involving chocolate. Everyone liked chocolate, right?

Juliet was happy she'd taken Home Ec last semester. It meant she made it all the way through the recipe without whining or bugging Jeremy for help. And she knew not to go near the meaty ... stuff.

She was proud of herself.

Bobby... tried to follow the recipe, he really did.

A semester of Steve's class meant he managed to make it through the steps without setting anything on fire or causing a major disaster, but... somehow his cupcakes ended up with a slight turkey taste, despite the fact that he hadn't gone anywhere near the meat.

Rilla wasn't even deigning to notice the fish, thank you very much.

She was making vanilla cupcakes with chocolate chips because that was as outside-the-box as she was prepared to go.
