The students were meeting in the Danger Shop today, which looked quite a bit like the school library, but with enough computer terminals for about half the class. "If you haven't had to do research yet in the course of helping your friend or coworker or whoever it is you have in mind, I can almost guarantee you will at some point or another," Hermione began. "In fact, should there be any sort of invasion or islandwide problem while you're here, there will probably be an opportunity for you to use this skill. Information is very important. You want to be as prepared as possible for any situation in which you might find yourself, because that will give you the start to solving the problem. Personally, I'm used to using books for this sort of thing. I know now you're more used to computers, which is something I'm still getting used to. I know that doesn't mean it's not a useful tool. Just know that whatever's out there can be put up by anyone, and it might not always be the most accurate information.

"Now, for class today, I'm going to give you things to research. Since we're in Egypt, I changed my original plan at the last minute and found some ancient Egyptian artifacts for you to learn about." Hermione maybe sounded really excited about that, even picking up speed when she talked. "You're going to pick an item to research and find out everything you can by the end of the class period. What it is, when it's from, what it's used for... You can use the computers or look things up in the stacks here, but please note that there are only so many computers and either you'll have to take turns, or some of you will only be looking in books. I'm also not going to assign something specific to any of you, so you can pick whatever you're most comfortable with, and you can ask others for help. Sharing information is another very good way of getting information. Just don't spend the whole class gossipping, please."

Just as she was about to let them get to work, she stopped and said, "Oh, and keep in mind that not everything in ancient Egypt was exactly... pleasant to research, so if you're looking at anything about mummification, try to keep the 'ew's to a minimum."

Spock selected the False Door of Nikaure, curious as to how a door could be 'false.'

By the end of class he had compiled quite a bit of information on the door, which he noted came from the tomb of a priest of Ra in the Fifth Dynasty, and which the Egyptians believed allowed the soul to enter and depart the Land of the Dead, and had begun researching the hieroglyphics on it. Linguistics was not really his area of interest, but he saw no need to not be thorough.

Spock's definition of thorough was rather more, well, thorough than a lot of people's.

Luke picked the Aegis depicting Hathor thing. Seemed like something he could do.

Oh it was a weird art thingy.

Wesley picked himself out a nice stack of about six books and settled down to research the offering tablet. This was going to be a fun class.

Percy chose the Block Statue of Nedjem. For awhile, Percy just stared at those four words while his mind wandered before he forced it back on topic. He managed to find out that the Block Statue of Nedjem was named so because the guy, Nedjem, looked like a block in the pose he'd been carved in. Percy learned that people put the statue in the Temple of Ptah to represent Nedjem for eternity.

Somehow, Americans got a hold of the statue during the Civil War and it was used as a ballast before it ended up in an American museum for awhile. It was finally sold back to Egypt and Percy guessed that meant Nedjem had gone home.

Raven was becoming more accustomed to using her laptop (for things other than Rumor Gal, even), but she still preferred books, and she gathered a stack to research the False Door of Nikaure.

The fact that it acted as a door to the land of the dead had her very intrigued.

Um, could Gabrielle research everything? Absolutely everything? There probably wasn't enough time for that, though, so she narrowed it down to a (reasonable, she thought) total of three: the Aegis, the Offering Tablet, and the Funerary Mask.

And she'd stick to the books for this, thanks; computers didn't smell like knowledge as far as she was concerned.

. . . given her ambitious research goals, she might have been better off sticking to the computer. But oh well. She'd be here all period.

Oh, and never, ever, ever sharing any of this information with Autolycus. Unless they needed to steal any of this stuff for a good reason . . .

Stephanie hit the computers to research, because they were faster and she'd had it drilled into her head by now that you had to be accurate but time-efficient when on a case. It wasn't nearly as easy or efficient as the setup in the Batcave or the one Oracle had, but she was fine with that; her first couple of Spoiler gigs had been pulled off with the help of an old desktop and a dialup connection, and the local library.

Could she help it if her research on the Statue of Nedjemu was focused mostly on whether there were any legends surrounding it that might make it of interest to Gotham's criminal element? It'd be awesome if she could get a head start on keeping an eye out there, in case.

Considering how badly Surreal had done in her computers lesson the other day, it wasn't a surprise how quickly she went for the books. She found the concept of a funerary mask a bit chilling, but fascinating, and may have wandered off on a research tangent to learn more about Lady Tjuya.

Claudia actually looked up a few of the items -- mostly to see if they might have ended up in the Warehouse at some point. She didn't recognize any (if they had any special powers, they were likely in Warehouse 2, which would be out there somewhere likely on the other side of Alexandria), but that didn't mean she couldn't impress the crap out of Artie if any of them ever came up.

"What are you looking at?" Scully asked Claudia, already arm-deep in the mummification techniques. If she'd been Spock, she'd have been saying fascinating.

"The funerary mask," Claudia said, because that was what she was looking up right that moment. "I've got some notes on the offering tablet and the false door, too."

"I always thought we could use a full-time research staff at the X-Files," Scully said absently. "Mulder used to look up only the stuff that interested him... what's the offering tablet?" She cracked her neck, and one hand went out blindly, searching for her coffee cup.

Like Scully could pass up a mummy. And a coffin.

The coffin and Mummy of Paankhenamun were currently at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2011; he'd been identified as a doorkeeper in the temple of the god Amun. A priest then. And old already when Alexandria was established, about 800 B.C....

Scully would love to see the real thing, and examine it.

Rinoa knew you could research using the computers, but she liked the smell of books so much more. So she dug through the library, looking for information on the false door of Nikaure.

False doors themselves were part of tombs, to allow the spirit of the dead to move from this world to the next. And Nikaure was a particular priest from that era. Rinoa found a pretty picture of the relief on the door, and wondered if the lotus flower was symbolic in some way or just decorative.

Well. She was in a library already ... might as well look that up, too!

"Psst," Jack said to his big sib from where he was sitting. "This whole... island moving through time and all that. Normal? Or do I need to stock up on canned goods?"

"It's new to me," Rinoa said, shrugging easily. "But nobody seems all that fazed by it. Come on, we're getting to go sight-seeing, what's not to love?"

Once Jack was done talking to Hermione, he was ready to face his assignment.

Okay he was ready to call General Dynamics and try and do his assignment.

"No, Fargo, I just want to talk to someone who knows something about Egyptian artifacts... Okay, yeah I know he died but isn't there someone else?"
