Computers 101, 1st Period [Friday]

Since it made the most sense to him, Sam had taken over the computer lab for his workshop, and since it was the first time they were meeting, he'd made sure all the computers were on and ready to go when the students arrived.

His students. Yeah, that wasn't going to get old any time soon.

"Hey guys," he said, perching on the edge of the desk, since it made him a little less intimidatingly tall. "I'm Sam Winchester, and you all can call me Sam because I'm really not old enough to be Mr. Winchester yet. For those of you who don't know me, I graduated from Fandom last year after four seriously crazy and awesome years, so if you've ever wondered if it's possible to survive here for that long, it totally is. If you have any questions about this place, and not just about class, I'd be happy to talk to you." Because there were few things Sam loved more than talking about Fandom, the dork. "I'm going to be spending the next few weeks getting you guys more comfortable with computers, and/or showing you how to do stuff you don't normally do. Computers are a big part of the 21st century--which, granted, we're not in right now--but if you're going to stick around for a while, you should at least learn how to not be afraid of them."

Sam stood up so he could see everyone and smiled around at the class. "Since this is our first week, I figured we could do the introduction thing?" he said, sounding slightly uncertain, but hoping everyone would go with it. "So, names, when you're from, and how much computer experience you already have. Then, I'll show you how to set up a username and password for yourself, to use for the rest of the workshop."

Topher was going to kill his parents for signing him up for this. Clearly it had been some kind of appeal to his computer obsession, but the 101 part? Not working for him.

"Hey," he said. "Topher Brink, and it's 2001 back home. And not to mess up the whole introductory level thing, but I can program software in my sleep, so..."

"Hullo. I'm Nobody Owens but I go by Bod since it's less confusing," he started, giving everyone a nod. "I'm from present time but I was raised in a graveyard by ghosts and they didn't have a real need for any sort of technology like televisions and computers so I didn't start to use a computer until about a year ago and I still don't really know what to do with them. As far as experience, I can turn the computer on and navigate the internet but not much more than that."

"Hi!" Caroline greeted the class and the totally hot professor with a bright smile. "My name is Caroline Forbes and I'm from the present, which means I can like, already use the computer and surf the web and all that stuff the junior high lab teacher droned on about. Um, not that I think you're going to drone on, Sam. I'm pretty sure you could read to us from the dictionary and class would be awesome, so we'll just go with me having experience and my mentor signing me up for this class because he still calls it a scary magic box." Right.

"Surreal, and I do not think that I understand the question," she replied. "I am from now, since I am here, but this is not my Realm." Which was probably pretty obvious, given her clothing (http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm282/barish_badal_2008/jajee/mix%20bolllywood/tn_13Aug07-950853928.jpg).

"Hi! I'm Bobby McCallister," he said enthusiastically. "It's 2006 at home, and computers are awesome. I can use them and write programs and stuff. ...Jack calls me a nerd, but it's not a bad thing, right?"

Totally, it was a bad thing.

"Seifer Almasy, and I'm pretty sure my world is on line with this one, but it would take higher physics classes than I've taken to figure it out. Pretty much everything in my world is computerized now, but I don't know the systems here. So I guess it's a good thing I was put in this class."

He paused and gestured at his laptop. "What sort of idiotic masochist designed this Windows system anyway?"

"I am Faramir," he introduced himself. "I am of the year 3000 of Third Age, which I am sure means very little. Suffice to say have little to no experience. There was a class I had last semester that made us use them, but I admit that I avoided it as much as I could."

Oh dear. Rilla had difficulty talking in public to begin with, but add in a cute teacher?

Hopeless.

"I'm Rilla Blythe," she said, enunciating carefully, "and I'm from Canada, where it's 1915. I've taken a few clatheth--" darn it--"about living in the future, but I'm still worried I will break thomething bigger than a 'phone."

"My name's Rinoa Heartilly," she smiled, "and I'm ... actually I'm from the same place Seifer is."

She wiggled her fingers at her ex.

"We have computer systems, but not cell phones -- just landlines. Until recently, all the radio communication was cut off due to interference."

It had to do with, believe it or not, a Sorceress who refused to die and was trapped in outer space, so it was probably better if Sam didn't ask.

Topher was done with his username and password before Sam had even gotten to step two.

He was obnoxious like that.

Bod paid close attention to Sam's instructions and then wrote them down before setting to work creating a username. He ended up with graveyardboy which wasn't super creative but it was true.

Caroline was a good student, hanging on Sam's every word as she wondered how he got his hair to do that whole messy but sexy thing. Oh right, and she made a username and password that she would surely forget and need special help with next week.

Bobby had his username and password set up almost instantly. But then he went back and changed his password over and over to make sure it was strong enough.

Seifer was done with that before Sam even finished, because, well, there were instructions.

And yes, he could follow instructions, it was just orders he had an issue with.

Faramir was not done almost instantly. He took a very long time, struggling with the keyboard and the alphabet. Perhaps it would have been easier if he had not chosen a password in Elvish, but it seemed safest to him.

Rilla went with the incredibly creative bmblythe as her username, but she didn't pick "password" as her password, so progress of some kind was being made.

Rinoa's username was, naturally, princessrinoa.

And her password was angelo. Which was a step up from 'password,' but ... a very small step, at best.

It took Surreal awhile to find each letter on the keyboard, frowning in concentration as she tried to make sense of the order of the buttons. She was pleased when she managed to type out stiletto for her username, even while being one of the slowest in the class chafed at her pride.
