"Yo, losers!"

Nope. Not 'Rookies,' today. Reno had a syllabus, and that was the sort of thing that happened when he tried to stay topical while following it.

One of the many reasons why Reno should never have a syllabus, kids.

"I'm Reno, an' this is your Attitude workshop for the first half of the summer, yo. I can tell you're all thrilled." Smile for the crazy ginger at the front of the room, kids. Show him how pleased you are to be here. "So, if you're one of them kids that actually signed up for this course, congrats. You get to learn how to stop bein' a loser before the term is through. Maybe you'll even be good at it, yo! If you ain't one of them kids an' you got no clue what you're doin' here, good job, you or the office managed to screw up your paperwork, an' now you're stuck with me!"

It was kind of eerie, the way he sounded so cheerful through all of that.

"Now, since it's the first workshop an' all, we're gonna take it easy, yo. Introductions, but with a twist. Today, I wanna hear your name, what you're doin' in this first class, and the worst insult that you can remember anybody ever throwin' at you. And then I want you to throw somethin' at me. Do your friggin' worst, kids, and toss in a rude gesture while you're at it, yo."

Yep. Reno was telling you to tell him off. And maybe to flip him off at the same time.

"Try an' keep your pants up, yo."

Oh yeah. Reno was going to sob himself to sleep tonight over that one.

"Thanks," he replied, grinning. "The responsible types get all the fun, Spitboy. So, when are you gonna insult me?"

Burned right on back, Fredward.

Freddie made a little face when he was called 'Spitboy'.

"Well, how about... you're a nub and no one would ever love you without being blind, deaf, or stupid?"

He was pretty much reciting Sam lines, yes.

Reno was now yawning and holding up his hand. The one with the more-or-less wedding ring on it. And okay, it had been gotten during a drunken spree on a cruise ship with Rikku back when, but considering they were still living together...

"Try gettin' creative, man. Say unkind things about my mother. Say unkind things about my face. Or at least flip me the bird, here."

"I don't even know your mother," Freddie said. "What if she's a really nice person? I wouldn't want to insult someone that might be nice..."

Oh, Freddie.

"I wouldn't worry about it," Reno snorted, "she's probably dead, anyhow."

Reno's family: What family?

"You must be the 'nub' that chick was talkin' about on the bus on Saturday, huh?"

Freddie made another face, and nodded.

"I guess she didn't hold up her end of the bargain, then," he said

"Guess that depends on what the bargain was, yo," Reno replied, easily.

Now he was curious, Freddie.

"I told her if she didn't insult me for the first week, I'd buy her a steak," Freddie said. "I mean, it's bad enough she's the friend that's at this school with me, I didn't need her turning me into the school target right away."

"Well, if it makes you feel any better, you don't really need her help," Reno offered.

Oh, wait, he was supposed to be supportive, wasn't he?

"Give me the finger, Spitboy."

... That was supportive. Honest.

"...I don't like doing that," Freddie said. "It's just so... you know, rude."

"That's the point," Reno replied, raising an eyebrow. "You give me the finger, you can have an A for the day, an' I won't make all the other kids laugh at you."

... He could do that, right? As the teacher, and all?

Probably not. But he wasn't going to tell Spitboy, here.

Freddie hesitated.

"You're not going to tell my mom, right?"

This was a very important question.

"Freddie, my man, I don't even know your mom."

And, really, Reno had better things to do with his time than tattle on a kid for doing what he'd been asked to do in class by the teacher.

And so, Freddie, while he turned his head so he didn't have to see it himself, quickly flashed the finger at Reno for less than a second.

~~Somewhere, Nickelodeon corporate executives just shuddered.~~

"See, that didn't hurt, did it?"

Reno gave Freddie a nice, solid clap on the shoulder to congratulate him on a job more-or-less done, ish. Not really well, but at least the kid was willing to take direction. Kinda.

"Hang in there, Spitnub. We'll get you through the first half of the summer yet, yo."

"Spitnub," Freddie repeatedly. "So help me, Sam better never hear that."

He'd never live it down. Ever.
