Summer Fitness and Survival, Monday, Period Four

Bond had handwavily informed the class to meet him at the Danger Shop, which was set up to resemble the edge of the lake, a short way from the Viking village, and to dress appropriately.

"Good afternoon, class. Since I'm seeing mostly new faces, I'm Professor Bond." His smile bore absolutely no resemblance to that of a shark which had just figured out where all the tuna were. None at all. "Now this class is Summer Fitness and Survival, but given our current surroundings we'll put less of an emphasis on the Summer part until we're somewhere warmer.

"Since this is the first week, we'll be doing introductions, in this case name, class, and something you might like to learn or focus on over the next seven weeks, while also practising a valuable survival skill, in this case fishing. Since it's unlikely you'll just randomly have a rod handy at any time you need to fish, we'll be using these." He bent down to pick up something that was most definitely not a fishing rod. The class could probably guess they weren't in the Danger Shop for this class instead of actually at the lake just because Bond was in a generous mood. He went on to explain some basic spear fishing techniques.

"Now, if you'll all take a moment to change before heading into the water," Bond said, nodding towards a collection of extremely fashionable waders in various sizes. "Then we'll begin."

After changing, Cassidy was looking around at the rest of the class.

Why had Ranon thought something like this would be a good class for her?

Alexander rather liked the waders; in a certain environment, they would be very practical. He knew he was excited, too, about the fishing spear. That, too, could be practical...not only for catching fish, but should one need a handy weapon at any moment....

Jason didn't even mind the waders, because oh my god, how awesome was getting to spear fish?! Getting signed up for this made so much more sense than some of his other classes.

"Mercedes Thompson. I'm a sophomore and I'd be interested in learning more about..." She really had to think to come up with something, because, honestly, if she was ever stuck somewhere she'd shift and the coyote could pretty much fend for itself. "Um... maybe what foods are safe to eat in the wild?"

"Thank you, sir," she said politely. "I'm sure I'll learn a great deal from this class."

Maybe not stuff she'd ever need, but still, it was the truth.

With a smile, Alexander ducked his head in greeting to the rest of the class. "Hello; my name is Alexander of Daventry. I'm a junior and I suppose it would be too simple to say that I hope to learn more tools for survival, so I will go ahead and mention that I would be very interested in learning how every day items might be used to get oneself out of trouble."

That sort of thing...seemed incredibly useful in his life.

"Jason Todd, junior, and I don't think you can ever have too many skills for survival," he said happily. "Especially around here, you never know what you might be asked to do to stay safe."

"Jack McCallister, senior. I wouldn't mind learning some of the basics the Boy Scouts learn. Only for an older audience." Mom never let him join the Boy Scouts.

Mercy had never done spear fishing before, but she was pretty good at it. She might have forgotten herself a few times and moved faster than a human could while she was spearing, though.

And she'd had to gut and prepare fish more times than she could shake a stick at, so it wouldn't have bothered her.

Gutting and preparing fish Alexander could easily do; the spearing of them took a little bit of work, and, after a while, he was almost tempted to call up on some magic to help him out.

He didn't, though, and, eventually, he managed to get his timing right and pierce through one of the fish, which he wound up lifting and brandishing with a proud laugh. It would be a while before he got his second one, but there was no denying that the boy was determined.

The big problem with spear fishing was that it involved patience, which wasn't something Jason possessed a lot of. The first few fish slipped away before he could get them, but after a little while, Jason was finally able to wait until a fish got nice and close, and then caught it. He couldn't help but smile after that.

Jack was not good at this. He wasn't accounting for the light deflection once it hit the water.
