Hero Management- Monday- Period 3- Class #1

It was Hermione's first day teaching.

It was a little intimidating.

Still, she was trying not to look intimidated, especially when this was a subject where she definitely knew what she was talking about. All she had to do was remind herself that she was in charge, and act authoritative. That part at least wasn't hard at all.

"Welcome to Hero Management. My name is Hermione Granger. You may call me Miss Granger," she started. 'Professor' didn't seem to fit in this situation and she wasn't about to let her students call her by her first name. "If you didn't read the class description when you signed up, or if perhaps you were signed up accidentally, this class is going to deal with how to manage being part of a hero's support system. If you've been in Fandom for any amount of time, you know that there are people who have important destinies, or who end up at the forefront of crises. This doesn't apply to most of us, but that doesn't mean there's nothing we can do to help. One of my best friends defeated the greatest Dark Wizard of our time at the age of seventeen. I won't say standing behind him was always fun or easy, but when he needed help, I wanted to do what I could for him. So for the next seven weeks, you're going to learn some things that will allow you to help out the best you can. And if by some chance you're one of the hero types taking this class, maybe you can pick up some pointers yourself."

"Now," she said, "the first week is usually all about introductions, which is exactly what we're going to do today. I want you to go around the room and introduce yourselves, along with the reason why you're taking this class. Let's start with you."

"Wizard?"

One of the problems with Jack is that he has no internal monologue and tends to blurt out things as soon as they come into his head.

"Did she just say 'dark wizard'?" he asked in a hushed tone to nobody in particular.

"She did," Scully said, keeping her voice down in order to not draw attention. "I'm sorry?" That seemed like one of the only things she could say, if that was coming as a shock.

"Oh, this just keeps getting better all the time," Jack muttered to himself as he slunk down in his desk.

Scully gave the new student a wince of sympathy. "Misleading brochure?"

Jack's hands flew up in frustration. "Uh... yeah!"

Trying to remember back a year about what had surprised her the most that first week, Scully asked, "Are you in the right year? 2011? And if it helps, I haven't met anyone yet who knew what they were getting into when they got here."

"Right year?" Jack asked as he rolled his eyes. "Seriously? This is a problem now?"

Actually it was even more of one than Scully had remembered at the time; she looked sheepish. "Did you notice the Viking settlement across the Causeway?" And not just that, say, she was from eleven years in the past.

Jack sighed. "Yeah. For some reason that freaked me out less than the whole magic thing."

Well technically matter transportation was possible where he was from. Even if it did violate various treaties.

"Hunh," Scully said, amused. "I think the time travel messed with me the most when I got here. I'm from eleven years in the past. That and my big sibling walking up a wall like gravity was a suggestion."

Surreal gave the boy a strange look. "Why?" she asked, not bothering to try and whisper. "What is a wizard?"

Jack motioned with his hands to keep the noise down. "Well last I checked," Jack whispered, "It usually someone who does magic. Not the kind where you saw someone in half, either."

Surreal made a face. "What is it with you people and sawing people in half?" she asked, disgusted. "There are so many easier ways to kill a man with magic."

[identity profile] exactlyaverage.livejournal.com 2011-05-09 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"Whoa, whoa, whoa," Jack said shaking his head. "We don't kill people like that. Okay, we could kill someone like that but it's just a trick.. thing. For entertainment."

"I have been here two days, and I am starting to lose track of how many people have asked me if I can saw a man in half," Surreal replied, sighing. "It seems like an odd method of entertainment."

"But what is a wizard? Someone who uses magic for not-sawing people?"

"... Actually I'm probably the worse person ever to ask what a wizard is," Jack said shaking his head. "Because until today it was just a fictional thing that showed up in books and movies. Though I guess you could say that it's a guy who can practice magic. Usually with a pointy hat and a white beard."

Rinoa leaned over to her little sib.

"Magic is real, some people practice it, and the evil ones are hard to kill," she filled in, helpfully. And just to be a complete hypocrite, she followed it up with "Shhhh."

By now Jack was in a joking mood about this. "See... that would have been a nice thing to know in the first place," he said in a teasing manner and then followed it up with a "Shhhhhh."

The mention of a wizard didn't really phase Percy. He was just glad there wasn't anything to take notes on today so he could just listen and try to focus on the words that were coming out of the teacher's mouth.

Even if his attention stayed on Miss Granger, he was still restless enough to tap his fingers against his desk and twirl a pencil around between his fingers.

The wonderful thing about teleportation was that Raven could easily return from Italy to make it to class. She didn't want to miss the first day, after all.

Having a few weeks off before class meant that Luke's ability to focus was up, so he was fully alert and listening to everything the hot teacher was saying.

And noting that he might quite possibly be older than her. Sigh.
