Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

"It was an arranged marriage, then?" Rilla asked.

"Oh, they're not married," Damian said.

[Well, they were in the original Son of the Demon story where Damian was conceived, but that was thrown out of canon and then ignored when Damian was brought back into canon because Grant Morrison doesn't backread. OH COMICS.]

Aww, look what you did, Damian. You gave a wee Edwardian-era girl the vapors. "You're--" she lowered her voice, "out of wedlock?!"

Damian sniffed. "Marriage is an unnecessary legal construct."

Rilla gaped at him before finally coming up with a possible solution: "Are you not from this planet, then?"

Or maybe he had an Uncle Saetan?

"Of course I'm from this planet!" Damian said. "Where are you from?"

"Prince Edward Island," she said. "Canada."

"Don't they have sex on Prince Edward Island?" Damian asked bluntly.

"Of course not!" Rilla sputtered inaccurately.

"How do your people reproduce?" Damian asked, genuinely curious. He'd been conceived the old-fashioned way, but grown in an artificial womb, so an island without sex didn't sound completely implausible. "Do you keep your people from having sexual urges via the use of drug therapy or is there a surgical procedure?"

Rilla stared at him. "We don't talk about it!"

"Really?" Damian gave her a skeptical look. "Historically, that hasn't been an effective method of chastity enforcement. Plus if you're using non-traditional reproductive methods, there must be a learning curve."

There was more sputtering and Rilla was turning an unbecoming shade of crimson. "We're polite!"

"Tt!" Damian scoffed. "Weak and useless. Your people will die out if they're not conquered by someone stronger."

"You keep your grubby Yankee hands off of my country," Rilla snapped.

Well, this was going well.

"Please. If I wanted to conquer Canada, I would have done so already," Damian said.

Rilla scoffed at him. "What are you, 13? You have to be 21 to even vote."

Damian lifted his chin. "You don't conquer by voting."

"You don't conquer Canada at all," she retorted, just short of stomping her foot.

"I'm not going to conquer anyone. My father wouldn't approve," Damian said. "But I could"

Rilla arched up her eyebrows. "What's your father's name? I'll write him a thank you note."

"Bruce Wayne," Damian said. "But he's a very busy man and I doubt he'll have time to read notes from Canadian peasants."

"Peasants?" Rilla squawked. "My father's a doctor!"

Then it dawned on her.

"Bruce Wayne? Of Gotham?"

"A peasant doctor," Damian muttered, and said, "Of course Gotham. What other Bruce Wayne is there?"

"One who certainly wouldn't have such a rude little son," Rilla muttered not quite under her breath. "And he is a dear friend of mine, and I'm sure he would have mentioned the...bizarre series of events that must have led to you."
