Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

"423," Ariel repeated, to remember it better, but if she forgot her new little brother's room number, she was just a terrible sister. "Got it. Fourth floor's a good floor; they usually have good food in the common room. How do you like your roommate so far? Do I have to give him a stern talking to about being nice?"

For some reason, she liked the idea of having to do that for Richie. It made her feel all responsible and such.

"There's food in the common rooms?" Yes, Richie was a typical sort of teenage boy and food was always necessary.

"Roommate seems nice enough," Richie said, amused that Ariel was acting protective. "I don't think he needs any talking to. Not yet at least."

Ariel grinned at that question; it was good to know that her little brother had good priorities.

"Lots of it," Ariel assured him. "But if you want Cheetos, come upstairs to my floor. I always make sure we have a good stock; they've become my absolutely favorite! And, good, that your roommate doesn't need any talking to, but if he does, you let him know."

"Cheetos are good stuff. Gotta love anything that orange, right?" Were redheads drawn to orange? Or was it just a teenager thing?

"I will remember where the Cheeto supply is located, Definitely. And I'll give you a call if the roommate situation turns bad."

It was likely a very fruitful combination of both.

Ariel nodded. "And now I'm trying to think of anything else you might need to know. Definitely check out the town when you get a chance, and the beach is great! And there's a pool in the basement; I love the pool. If you are in town, I work at both the music store and the clothing store, so stop in if you need to get anything, and you'll get the star treatment from me, Richie, promise!"

"I'm not a big swimmer," Richie said. "But maybe I'll check out the pool sometime. If it gets warmer. Shouldn't it be warmer in Maryland by now?"

Geography, not Richie's strongest suit. Sure, he thought the landscape looked a little odd but he really had no idea.

"I'll stop by one of the stores though. Maybe both. Thanks."

"Yeaaaah," said Ariel, a little cautiously as she gave a wary look toward the shore, "usually. Or, it was last year, anyway. But we sort of got attacked by vikings over graduation and then we time traveled back to their time."

"Wait, what?" No, really. What? "Vikings and time travel. For real?"

Richie, you live with a guy who's 400 years old and can't die unless someone takes his head off. Time travel is so hard to believe, really?

Ariel shrugged a little, before nodding her head. "For real," she said. "There's a lot of weird things that happen here. Time travel, chocolate rain, people who turn into animals..."

And sometimes vice versa...ahem.

"You're not just messing with me?" Richie, it would explain the vaguely volcanic landscape. And your roommate having a kind of impossible handheld computer.

"I mean, Mac told me it was kind of a weird place but...this is like some sort of weird hazing the new kids thing, right?"

Ariel held up her hands and implored her little sibling with the utmost sincerity. "I swear to you," she vowed, "I am not just messing with you. I know it probably sounds like it, but just give it some time and you'll think to yourself, 'ohmygosh, Ariel was so right.'"

"People really turn into animals?" Chocolate rain at least sounded like a thing that could happen. But again, Richie, your father figure is four hundred years old. You'd think you'd be more accepting of weirdness.

And Ariel did seem awfully convincing. "We'll see, I guess. I mean, I haven't seen anything too crazy yet."

"Only temporarily," Ariel assured him. "They always seem to turn back, so there's always that. Oh, and there was this one time where everyone's possible kids showed up. That was weird and really sort of made you think about the future and relationships and stuff, but that, too, passed nicely."

Richie was staring now. Kind of a lot.

"I gotta call Mac. Ask him if I can see that brochure he found for this place. Cos if it mentioned any of this, we definitely need to talk about it. And if it didn't, we gotta talk about how he didn't do his research."

Alternately they could talk about how Richie's school-appointed Big Sister was potentially crazy. Or messing with him. But Richie had a sinking feeling that she really, really wasn't.

Ariel gave a faint grin to that. "I'm pretty sure there are about ten different brochures, and just about no one gets the one they should. I didn't even get one, myself."
