Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

"Oh, even better!" gushed Jane with a laugh. "I'm Jane, Jane Porter; how wonderful to meet the acquaintance of our new librarian. Have you seen the place yet? It is very impressive; quite possibly one of the most impressive libraries I've seen, to be honest with you, and I'm pleased to see that I've had the privilege of seeing many great libraries in my time."

That was a lot of talking, but Belle didn't mind. She just listened, her eyes wide as she took in the information, and waited for a pause so she could answer. "I'm Belle. It's wonderful to meet you, Jane. And I haven't hand a chance to see it yet, but I can't wait. Especially if it's so big! I've seen...well, one other really impressive library, I suppose, but I expect this one will impress me even more! Especially since I've heard there's things here I've never even dreamed of. I can't wait to read all about everything."

"Well, if it does cease to impress," said Jane a bit impishly, "then I would truly love to see this other library you speak of! I do have a feeling you won't be disappointed, though; it's marvelous, and I've spent probably too many hours in there, taking full advantage of its resources."

"There's no such thing as too many hours spent reading," Belle said with a warm smile, shaking her head.

"You'll find no argument with me there!" said Jane, laughing, though she did amend the statement. "Well, no, perhaps a little. Experiencing something in a book is one thing, but going out and doing it yourself is just as thrilling, if not more so. Then again, this is coming from a teacher teaching about expeditions into the deepest African jungles, though, so I lean toward a bit of a bias. Nothing like a good adventure to get the blood pumping!" Complete with a little pump of Jane's fist. "And a good book to start activating the brain!"

"You teach about Africa?" Belle asked, her eyes going even wider, if that was possible. "Oh my. I'd love to go somewhere that amazing. And I completely agree -- books are amazing, but if I can have my own adventure, instead of reading about someone else's, well...." She shrugged, laughing a little. "Well, that line of thought is how I ended up here, actually."

"I not only teach about it," said Jane, unable to help pulling herself up quite proudly, pleased to have an impressed response to that, "I've been there, several times. Best way to learn about apes is to see them for yourself, after all. And that's wonderful! Did you plan to come here from the start, or was it just the winds of adventure that brought you here?"

"Something like that," Belle admitted with a light giggle. "I found the brochure, and...well, I'd just finished my last big adventure. It only seemed right to find something new."

And if Adam hadn't exactly loved the idea, he'd supported it in the end, and that was important.

"So you teach the study of...apes?" Belle added carefully. "Or all African wildlife?"

"Well," said Jane, "mostly apes, or any sort of primate, really, though I do have an interest in all wildlife. The African jungles are so incredibly diverse that it would be absolutely impossible to study all of them at once, which is terribly unfortunate. I do love to sketch them all, though; you'll find everything, even plants, in my sketchbooks. It's so beautiful in Africa; you should absolutely go if you get a chance, though I recommend a guide, as it's quite dangerous, as well."
