Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

"Ugh, pigeons," was Warren's so very eloquent response to that train of thought. "I'm pretty sure I'd rather take being confused for an angel over being compared to a pigeon any day."

A pause, and then a kind of sheepish smile.

"There's actually a newbie day tradition around here that has most of the guys peeling off their shirts before the picnic is through," he shared. "I'm still kind of warming up to that."

Which was funny, considering it had already been decided that managing to lose his shirt was somehow Warren's other-other superpower.

"Warming up is right," she pointed out. "It's not really shirtless weather." A slow smile crept over her face. "But don't worry, you won't shock me if you need to undress."

A blush moved over Warren's cheeks at about the same pace as that smile of hers, there.

"Well, that's good to know," he replied, trying to sound nonchalant. It was almost working! If only that blush didn't totally throw it off. "It actually happens more often than you'd think."

Shirts were for other people. People who weren't built like Warren. You needed a nice frame to be able to support yourself in flight, after all.

She could believe that. Also she couldn't help noticing that he was way more muscled than usual pictures of angels. But then Warren actually had to fly whereas an angel...

How was she even seriously contemplating this? It was like the entire world had turned upside down since yesterday evening.

"Well, yes, of course," she agreed, smirking a little. "Showers...swimming...random needs to make other guys inadequate."

"I try to bite down those urges as much as possible," Warren laughed, shaking his head a bit even as he ducked it so that his smile was aimed mostly at the lawn. "Well, not the showers, obviously. Those are kind of important."

But he looked kind of pathetic when his feathers got wet, so he avoided swimming, for the most part. And making other guys feel inadequate was just mean. And something that he did entirely unconsciously, between the wallet and the wings and the abs and...

"I know I thank you for giving into them," Jocelyn teased. "it'd be pretty uncomfortable to stand here and pretend like there wasn't a massive smell..."

"I'd be standing here in a cloud of my own dust, you know." Warren was trying not to laugh, again. "It would be pretty uncomfortable for me, too, really."

It would itch. A lot.

"But, for the greater good of Fandom Island, I shower. Regularly. Promise."

He also clogged shower drains. He didn't mean to. Honest.

"You look like someone whose word I can take," she decided. "I thank you on behalf of the island, but I'm sure I'm far too new for that." She paused then added. "I now feel the need to assure you that I also know that showers are my friend. Don't worry, you don't have to have that big brothery conversation."

"You really have no idea how thankful I am to hear that," Warren noted. "I don't know if I'm properly equipped to make a journey into the girls' washroom to show you how to work one of those things."

He probably wouldn't survive the experience. He was realistic about this.

"Technology doesn't work very well in Idris," Jocelyn admitted. "But we do have running water at least. Even heated running water."

"I think I would be lost without running water, you know." It was true. Someday, Warren would be without it, and it would be a very tragic experience, indeed. "Most technology, I would probably take or leave. But running water..."

Without it, he'd be forced to bathe in streams or something! People might see his soggy-feathered shame! Wet wings were hilarious.

"Hot running water," she insisted. "Because waiting for a fire to heat up a kettle of water for a bath is just too awful." She'd been to country houses without hot running water. It was not fun.

Jocelyn smiled though. "I don't miss the electricity or cell phones or anything - though I might now when I can't call home to talk to anyone."

"Yeah, that would be pretty rough," Warren agreed, his smile going a little crooked for a moment. "There are always letters, I guess, but that isn't quite the same as actually hearing somebody's voice, huh?"

The only person he really had out there to call was somebody that he wasn't really in any rush to hear from again. That didn't make it any more difficult to empathize. He still missed his dad, after all.

[Sorry! Total braincrash happened swiftly and unexpectedly last night! There was important sleeping to do!]

Jocelyn shrugged, remembering she was a Shadowhunter and that complaining was weak. "There are. And it would have happened in a year or two anyway." She smiled up at him, pushing her hair behind her ears. "So, big brother, any final advice before I go meet the rest of my new schoomates?"

"Just to take it easy while you're here, and enjoy it," Warren decided. "And if you need anything at all, I'm in room 222. You can have my cell number too, in case there's some sort of emergency, or you have a question you absolutely need the answer to, or you suddenly forget how to get to the ice cream place in town."

Heaven forbid, right?

"I guess that means I should find a cell phone too before I'm lost somewhere on the island forever just out of reach of ice cream," she teased.

"It would be a horrible fate!"

Summer was coming! Uh. In theory. It all depended on Fandom's whims, really.

"I can help you find one, if need be. I'm pretty sure the Turtle & Canary in town carries them, actually."
