Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Aww! Well, Wes could help with that. Probably. As long as he steered away from talking about weird things. Like, you know, most of Fandom.

"Well, Fandom is certainly unique," he admitted. "You might have noticed the Vikings?"

"I was kind of hoping that was just some sort of... variation on a Ren Faire," Freddie said. "That or some really ambitious roleplayers."

Ha! Ambitious roleplayers at Fandom? Never.

"Unfortunately not," Wesley said with a little smile, amused. Huh. So this kid had to be from a totally normal world, then. He was lucky to have escaped that particular handicap. "The first thing to know about this school is that... well, the island doesn't really, er, stay still."

Good luck digesting that, Freddie.

"Like... earthquakes?" Freddie said, thinking that wasn't common for the East Coast.

No, Freddie. Not like earthquakes.

"Not exactly," Wesley said, trying to figure out how to explain this. "It's more that... occasionally, we wake up and the island is, er, different. For example, we currently appear to be in Iceland."

Seriously, Freddie. Look around. There were Vikings. And, you know, sombreros, but that was beside the point.

"This is the weirdest hazing I have ever had," Freddie said, still not quite getting it. "And that's including the time Sam dipped my feet in frozen yogurt. And then yelled at me for ruining the froyo."

Ah, if only.

"I assure you, I'm not hazing you," Wesley said, a tiny bit regretfully. Ah, well. There went Freddie's innocence. "The island... well, odd things seem to happen here." And as proof? "For two weeks this summer, I was an owl."

"An owl," Freddie said, skeptically. "Look, I'm not trying to say you're lying, I know I once went to a dance with a girl that was legitimately magical, but this is sounding a little crazy."

"Oh, I know," Wesley hastened to say. "And it's likely you won't fully believe me until -- the island moves to Uganda, or something." It could happen. "But I assure you, all of this is very real."

A liiiiittle bit ominous, Wes. Just a bit.

"Well, Uganda beats Yakima," Freddie said, trying to sound like he fully believed Wesley. "So, uhhh, you're from England?"

Luckily, Freddie did not use his horrible English accent while asking that question.

Wesley had no idea what Yakima was. But sure.

"That I am," he agreed. "And you're from..."

He did his best to guess Freddie's accent.

"The Pacific Northwest?"

"Seattle," Freddie said with a nod. "Was an overnight flight, I'm just lucky that Sam let me get some sleep. Though I made sure not to have a seat next to her just for that reason."

Sam, Sam... oh! Wesley had seen someone with a "Sam" name tag.

"Sam... the, ah, the girl with the chicken, right?" he asked, gesturing vaguely. "You two came here together?"

"Only in the sense that we were on the same plane," Freddie said. "She's here because she dumped a smoothie on a police officer. I'm here because Sam slipped my mom a brochure that made her think this was the safest school in the world."

[identity profile] wesleynotponcy.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, that wasn't very nice of her," Wesley said, slightly miffed just at the idea of this girl. "And there was no convincing your mother otherwise?"

Because dear god, Fandom? Safe? Ha.

"My mom isn't exactly the reasonable type," Freddie said. "I love her, but... wasn't going to happen."

"Ah." One of those, then.

"Well, you're here now," he said, trying to be encouraging in some way. "And while Fandom is certainly a bit odd, it truly is a nice place. And if anything is overwhelming, you can absolutely come to me with any questions you might have."

Helpful, Wes!
