Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

Alex gestured to his nametag and said, "That's me! I just go by 'Alex,' though." Okay, so he was British. Maybe that wasn't so bad? Alex stuck out his hand and said, "Hi."

There was something... vaguely creepy about this kid. Just vaguely. But he was his new roommate, so Wesley wasn't going to judge. Or... actively fear him.

"Hello," Wes said back. "Er, welcome to Fandom."

Assuming he was new, of course. But he looked about thirteen, so, you know. It seemed like a safe guess.

Oh, was he radiating? He could dial that down. Did he seem normal yet? "Thanks," Alex said. "Um, I've never had to share a room before, it's always been just me and my dad," except for the POW years, and he was in a cell then, so. "I'm kind of messy. But I'll try to keep it to a dull roar?"

Ah, well. Wes might just be overly sensitive.

"Noted," Wesley said, a bit more at ease all of a sudden. "I'm -- er, not messy, but we'll manage."

He had swords under the bed, so, you know, it evened out.

They told Alex to put his in his weapons locker. Once he found out you could hide them under the bed there was totally going to be some smuggling going on. "Maybe we could put a line down the middle of the room," Alex joked. "'No disaster area over this tape.'"

"I'm sure we'll figure something out," Wesley decided.

And if not, you know, they could always duel.

"My last roommate had a dog," he added. "A mess is nothing at all compared to, er, that."

It had been a big dog.

Dueling Alex was likely to be bad for your health. Grasscutter could cut anything. He could use a practice sword, though, although his dad said those were for pansies. "Oh, I don't have any pets." Unless you counted his sword. "So that should be fine."

"Excellent," Wesley said, gratified. "Neither do I."

Obviously.

"Great!" Alex said. "I'm sure we'll get along fine."

Or kill each other.

"Uh," Alex said. "Okay, this might sound weird, but if you start having nightmares, could you, like. Tell me?"

Well, that was a weird question.

"Er," said Wesley. "Why?"

Because, you know. His girlfriend was out in a dangerous arena where she could get killed at any time. That was bound to cause a nightmare or two.

"Because..." Alex winced a little. "Because it might kind of be my fault? And if I don't know I'm doing it I can't stop."

"Oh."

Huh.

"Okay?"

"Okay, great!" Alex said, beaming at him.

He...might be seeming a wee bit creepy again.

Yeah. Creepy. For sure.

"Well, er," Wesley said a bit awkwardly. "I'll... see you later, then."

"Okay, I'll see you in our room, Wesley," Alex said with a cheerful wave.
