Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

Elphaba's mouth twisted a bit, but she wasn't about to be judgmental straight off the bat. This was an improvement for her, if she was honest.

"I believe I'm your new big sibling," she said. "Elphaba Thropp. It's a pleasure to meet you."

Elphaba. Okay. That was apparently a name.

"You too," he ventured, but it came out sounding a bit like a question. Not that he was a racist or anything. Just, well. Green.

Elphaba decided to address the proverbial elephant in the room.

"Yes, I am," she said. "This is my natural skin color, and while it may be shocking, I promise you it only makes me different if you decide it does."

Elephant addressed and noted, Elphaba, thanks!

And look at that, Topher was actually caught off guard. That happened... not a lot.

Chastised, he did have the decency to say "Sorry. Just -- you know. I've never -- uh."

That was a sentence.

Elphaba let out a little sigh and nodded. "It happens a lot," she said. "I'm used to it happening on first meetings. Especially from those that have just arrived. And not to frighten you, but my skin color is barely the tip of the gump's horn, if you understand my meaning."

If by "gump's horn" she meant "iceberg," then yup, he understood her meaning. Otherwise?

"Possibly?" he guessed. "Lay it on me."

"Well I don't want to disturb you," Elphaba said. "But there are things here beyond anything you can imagine. It takes almost everyone by surprise."

Well, now, that just sounded like the introduction to a video game.

"Uh," Topher said. "Like what?"

"We used to have a student who was a talking frog," Elphaba said. "And there are a multitude of powerful witches here, as well."

That made... zero sense.

"Is that so?" he asked, awkwardly scratching the back of his neck as he humored her. Then it was enough humoring her and he went right to sarcasm. "And the Easter Bunny, he goes here too, right?"

"I don't know what that is," Elphaba said, earnestly. "So I don't believe so."

Okay, this was officially strange.

"You've never heard of the Easter Bunny," he repeated, just to make sure.

"I'm not from Earth," Elphaba explained. "I come from the land of Oz, Munchkinland to be precise. You might be familiar through the awful children's story."

Topher stared.

Okay, that was just crazy.

"Okay, you had to know I wouldn't buy that," he said, grinning.

"I can only say that I'm not lying," Elphaba said. "And that you will believe me, eventually. So I'll tell you that you may stop by my room or call me if you need help. But I think you may have to experience some things for yourself before you come to understand."

Huh. That sounded... sincere.

"Look," Topher said, genuinely apologetic. "I'm a science guy. Experiencing for myself is kind of how I work." He shrugged. That was just how it was.

Elphaba nodded. "Science is a wonderful thing," she said. "Do you want any other information or help now, or shall I leave you to your science?"

Topher grinned. "I'll find you," he promised. "Thanks, though."
