Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

"Motorized vehicles?" Belle echoed in wonder. "You mean...machines? How amazing!"

She'd have to write to Papa immediately.

"Heh, yeah." Awww, her enthusiasm. "Machines on wheels, like... I dunno. Like carts, I guess? Four of 'em, around here. Or two. Where I'm from, they usually come on two or three, yo. And there ain't nowhere around here to park the flyin' machine that I used to pilot around back home, neither. Kinda sucks. I miss that thing."

And not just because he'd kissed Rikku for the first time while he was piloting it, either.

"You have machines that can fly?" she gasped, hands flying to her mouth in an excited flurry. "How? Are they like birds? Mechanical birds?"
raspberryturk: (Mmmhmm)

"Some of 'em are kinda shaped like birds, I guess," Reno mused, thinking about airplanes for a moment with a grin. "But the ones I got most experience with back home, helicopters are kinda more..." He squinted a bit. "Like a capsule with a propeller on the top to create lift, yo."

It was hard to explain these things to people who had no idea that you could make machines carry you around.

"There'll be books about these, right?" she checked, already picturing the stacks she'd be accumulating. "I can read and learn about these...hellocopters?"

"Plenty of books," Reno promised, grinning crookedly.

Hellocopters. That was about the cutest thing he'd heard people call them, yet.

"Hell, if you want, I probably got some manuals on 'em back home, yo. I mean, they're all written in nerd, but they got diagrams an' whatever in 'em, too."

"I don't know if I can read Nerd," Belle said doubtfully. "But I'd love to see them, if only for the diagrams!"
raspberryturk: (Mrow.)

"I'll see what I can dig up for you, then," Reno replied with a nod. "I'd love to get the real thing around here sometime, show it off, but, uh... for starters, the one I used for my job back home wasn't really mine. And fuellin' them things up costs a friggin' arm and leg, yo."

Not literally, but considering the way most helicopters on Gaia still ran on mako, it was a fairly near thing.

"They're expensive to run?" she interpreted loosely, frowning. "Why? If it's the primary mode of transportation, everyone should be able to use it!"
raspberryturk: (Just talkin)

"Well, flyin' machines ain't exactly the primary mode of transportation," Reno explained. "They're handy for coverin' real big distances fast, or for gettin' places in an emergency, but mostly people just rely on the stuff that sticks to the ground, yo. Way cheaper to run."

... Though still stupidly expensive lately.
