Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

"It's like what you'd think flying with two feet planted on a board would be like," Jim replied, his tone just as bright, even while he dropped his bag on the ground and walked over to pick up his board. "Only better."

Way better.

"Wow," Peter said, with barely disguised sarcasm, "That sounds really good."

"What, 'good' is the best adjective you can dig up?" Jim was smirking as he walked with his surfer toward a fairly clear area, and then dropped it onto the ground. "You seem like a pretty bright guy, Peter. I bet you can come up with better than that."

Hey, if he was going to dish out the sarcasm, Jim was just going to get more smug at him.

Oh, Peter was more than pretty bright. He quickly schooled his expression into something slightly more convincing. "Really special?" he volunteered, "Almost impossible? I'm sure you'll prove me wrong."

Preferably somewhere where an authority figure could give you a good, swift kicking-out for it...

In reply to that, Jim gave a quick glance around, shot Peter a smirk that could best be described as 'adorably obnoxious,' stepped onto the board with a click to lock his heel into place, and kicked up the sail. It was a bit of a patchwork mess, but it was his patchwork mess, and the honeycomb pattern that crisscrossed the breadth of it glowed vivid orange as it caught the sun.

"Maybe it is impossible. But nobody told me that when I built my first one of these things as a kid."

Another kick of his heel against the deck of his board set the propulsion system behind him off, and the board dragged against the ground for a couple of feet before Jim leaned his weight back, hard, and the whole thing, Jim and all, went up, instead.

He'd just make one quick victory lap around the grounds before landing again. No point in actually showing off or anything, here.

"Wow." Peter was looking up with big eyes for about as long as Jim was looking anywhere near him. Then? Then, he was quickly looking around, hoping to identify some kind of authority figure who might have a problem with it.

Hey, now. Jim wasn't actively looking for trouble just yet, and so he was even careful to land far enough away from the crowd to avoid any unfortunate collisions with passers-by. Another kick on the deck cut the power while he was still a few feet from the ground, and he pulled off a landing on both feet, grabbing his surfer and tucking it under his arm before his boots hit the grass.

"There we go. Completely impossible."

Stop gloating, Jim. It wasn't working.

"Okay, not completely impossible," Peter said. (That was not the kind of admission of wrongness that would make most people pass out, if heard coming from Peter; that was strategy.) "Like I said, I'm not really an athlete, and I haven't read anything about that."

So he'd have to be more subtle to get rid of him. Eh. That wouldn't be a problem.

Oh, Peter. Jim and his invisible drug habit were totally going to be your new best friend. You shared a room together! Wasn't that fun?

"Well, I'd say it was pretty big back home, but... it's not, really."

Because back home was big and stupid and boring. Most kids had a solar scooter or something of the sort when they were little, but they didn't generally have the same zip to them as Jim's surfer did.

"Because... you know. Mining planet."

"Mining planet," Peter repeated, seriously. Because human beings hadn't been holed up on Earth out of fear of the buggers for centuries, or anything. Oh no. Mining planets everywhere.

Maybe soon, but not yet. "Well, here's your chance to bring it to the masses."

"Yeah, we'll see," Jim replied, shrugging his shoulders dismissively before bending over to pick up his bag again. "I'd have to find the materials to make more, around here. Probably easier said than done."

Some of the technology he'd seen so far was vaguely familiar, but... not quite. It would be a challenge, but maybe it would keep him out of trouble for a bit.
