Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

Dolf totally had the handsome and blond parts working for him too, really. "Thanks. It's nice to meet you," he said politely, before looking around. "So, uh, this is Fandom, huh? Not quite what I expected."

"It never is for most people," Dolf said, with his best attempt at a reassuring smile. "Uh, this is going to sound weird, I know. But where and when are you from? The year, I mean."

"Uh, New York, 2011," Billy said. "Is there a wrong answer to that question?"

Another quick smile, this one more relieved. "No, no bad answers," he promised. "But it's-- do you have time travel where you come from? Or people with powers, like... superheroes?"

He had never been on this side of having to explain it before.

"We have both, yeah," Billy said, trying not to imply a "duh" in there or anything. "Although time travel is a really bad thing that shouldn't be done. That's kind of been my big lesson for the last few months."

Oh, what a fun summer it was going to be.

"...I'm not so sure about that," said the time-traveller, "But that's not important right now. I'm asking because this is a place where a lot of people meet." A beat. "From different times and places, I mean. I'm from 2006, but there are people here who are from the past century or earier, or other places completely."

Another beat.

"I mean that. Have you seen the Vice Principal?"

Dolf might have been summarising all of his own early newbie lessons here.

"I don't think I've met them yet, no," Billy said, because that would imply getting into trouble. He looked over at where the adults had gathered, and his eyes got a little wide. "Oh man, I thought that kid was messing with me when he said Deadpool would be here."

Dolf nodded once, and stuck his hands in his pocket. "That's the Vice Principal," he just said.

Aaaand now Billy was certain he'd gone from landing in a strange place to being in a bizzaro world. "Um. The people here know he's crazy, right?" he said quietly. "And how could he be the Vice Principal? He's too busy--" That was when what Dolf had said finally sunk in. "Oh. Different times and places, huh?"

Dolf's head went up and down accordingly in a sort of... nodding motion. "That is exactly it," he said. "Nothing here really works the way you expect it to, least of all the people. The quicker you get used to that, the quicker you'll be okay, I think."

"Okay, I get that, kind of," Billy said, even though he was sure he'd have a million questions later. "But what do you mean the people don't work like you expect?"

"Vice Principal," Dolf repeated, pointing at him. "And... other people have skills you don't expect them to have, or they can just do things. There aren't any superheroes where I come from, for example."

"There aren't? That's--wow," Billy said, trying to imagine a world without the Avengers. "So, the people who have powers and skills...is that weird here?" Not that he was asking for any particular reason, of course.

"Really weird," Dolf agreed, but his smile was conciliatory. "But my world has time machines." A beat. "A time machine. And I'm used to a little weird. I help the Magic and Support Reserves."

"The reserves for what?" Billy asked. "When you say weird, do you mean it like a bad thing?" Because that was the important part.

"The reserves where people meet up and figure out their powers and how to best help everyone on the island," Dolf said, shrugging. "I didn't come up with the name."

He locked his eyes on Billy. "And of course it isn't bad." He almost sounded indignant.

"I--I know it isn't bad. I just wanted to make sure you didn't think so either. Not that you seem like that kind of person, but, you know, new place, and if not everyone knows superheroes and stuff..." He trailed off before he could embarrass himself more. "That reserves group sounds cool. Do the teachers know about it?"

"It's been around for a long time, so they probably do," Dolf said, shrugging. "And it's... okay. To check, I mean. Not to think it's bad. I think anyone who does needs to have their head looked at."

"Unfortunately, not everyone uses their powers for good things. But I agree that anyone who judges everyone with special skills by the worst of the bunch does have issues they should talk about with someone," Billy said. "I wasn't sure what it'd be like here, but I think I have a much better idea now."

"Good," Dolf said, sounding genuinely relieved. "As your big sibling, I'm here to answer all of your questions if you have any, so don't be afraid to come to me. I'm in room 506 in the dorms." A beat. "Oh, and the island isn't supposed to be in Viking country, but it kind of... moved a week before. Ago."

"Moved like...an earthquake?" It was really the only point of reference Billy had about this type of thing.

"No, it just moved, like--" Dolf snapped his fingers. "One minute, America. The next, Iceland. Go look at the beach if you don't believe me."

"No, I believe you. I mean, you haven't tried to fool me yet, right?" Billy said. "But--is it going to move back soon? Like, a rebound or something?" Look, he was just trying to make things make sense as best he could.

Dolf shrugged helplessly. "Sometimes things happen and we don't know what'll happen next," he said. "You get used to it. I'm hoping, but you can never be sure."
