Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here and here, in an effort to keep browsers from breaking for as long as possible.]

Simon nodded, very very slowly. He was kind of willing to believe (after all this place had sounded like meta for Xavier's, and that wasn't a normal place either) but it'd still be a lot to take in.

He swallowed and adjusted his collar. "The broschure said this was a school for... special people?"

And now he was getting a whole new look -- now a mix of curiosity and understanding. "Not exclusively, but yeah. I guess it depends on your definition of 'special,'" she hedged. "People here can...do things you don't see much, off this island. At least, I don't."

"Do things, like..." He chewed on his lip, uncertain: he wasn't really used to talking about this with any degree of openness to outsiders. "Superhero things?"

If he sounded hopeful it was only because he was really, really hoping that part of the broschure held true, even if it had neglected to mention the island apparently moving around.

Sookie's smile was slow, and a little bit gentler than the overenthusiastic grin she'd greeted him with. "Yup. Some of us. I can, anyway, and I'd say...probably about sixty percent of the student body has some kind of ability. Do you have powers, honey?"

Simon a very slight nod, like it was a secret, although if what she was saying held true (and he really had no reason to doubt her), it wouldn't be one for too long. "What can you do?"

It was the last bit of hedging, mixed with actual curiousity, before he'd go blabbing about himself.

She arched a brow at him with a slight smile. << I'm a telepath, >> she projected into his head, keeping her mental voice soothing and throwing in a wave of calm, just in case he wasn't used to that kind of thing. She hadn't really run into shields, anyway.

"And you?" she asked, aloud this time.

No, Simon wasn't used to extra voices in his head, since Kelly's power only worked one way as far as he knew, but at the same time the concept wasn't unfamiliar. It was greeted with just the briefest widening of his eyes, and he blinked.

"I can turn invisible," he shared.

"Wow!" Sookie probably didn't need to be that excited about that, but that one was brand new to her. "That's handy. That's one of the better powers I know about here. You'll fit in just fine, honey."

Well, Simon appreciated her excitement, at least, and it showed in how a smile spread across his face. It wasn't a reaction he'd encountered before, even if that was largely because he'd never really told anyone outside his little group of friends.

"Thanks," he said, not really knowing what one was supposed to say to that. "I hope so."

"You will," she assured him happily. "Is there anything else you're, like, wondering about? Powers-wise or whatever?"

Simon chewed on his lip for a short moment. He was really rather confused and curious about a lot of things, but it was hard to pinpoint any actual questions.

"The island travels?" he checked then. "Does it do anything else... unusual?"

Sookie nodded, choosing her words carefully. "It can influence our behavior, sometimes. And the weather can be...weird. To be honest, I wasn't around the last time it traveled, but from what I hear, it should be kind of a fun summer."

Re: Meet Your Big/Little Sibling (Summer 2011)

[identity profile] forhisfriends.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That, however, was not what he zeroed in on.

"Influence our behaviour? How?"

He already had an idea, of course. The occasional storm-affected person doing that was familiar (if unfortunate), but an entire island was not.

[identity profile] justwantsquiet.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"Um, like, maybe one week, everyone'll really want...cake, for no reason," she said carefully.

Except instead of 'cake' sub in 'each other.'

"And it can turn us into things. Most people around here reverted to little kids about a month ago."

[identity profile] forhisfriends.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, the cake thing could easily happen too.

"Little children?" he asked, unsure how to feel about that. "That's... weird."

And he'd keep saying that for a while, like all the other newbies.

"Yeah, I stayed big for it," Sookie said, shrugging. "But it happened to me before. It's sort of a fun weekend. My cat hasn't recovered from my seven year-old boyfriend chasing her under the bed, though."

A pause, and then, "This island makes you say phrases like that, too."

[identity profile] forhisfriends.livejournal.com 2011-05-07 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the storm had made him say weird phrases too, he supposed. That didn't sound quite as bad if you compared it to his first day of community service, for one.

"I think I have some experience with that," he said, approaching wry. "I... think I'll survive."
