Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

The weather was nice, the school wasn't currently under attack from forces not of this universe and they were still in Iceland. Oh yeah, it was day one of the rest of the newbies' lives.

Welcome to fandom, kiddos. Try not to trip over left over sombreros from Thursday!

Ramona had written her name in rounded letters across her nametag, sticking a couple of cartoony flowers in the upper right hand corner. (It wasn't a pun. She just liked flowers, okay.) She found herself somewhere to stand and watch, though, once she'd actually put on said nametag, her eyes scanning the crowd for someone who looked like a Dave.

Of course, 'Dave' was one of those names where everyone looked like they could be a Dave, so....

For the moment, Dave was setting aside any thoughts along the lines of "Maryland doesn't look like that backgrop, does it?" and focusing on trying to find someone named Ramona.

After a little bit of searching, he spotted the bright hair and punny nametag - HE WAS GOING TO ASSUME, RAMONA - that made Ramona hard to miss in a crowd.

"Hi, excuse me. Ramona?" Dave asked, double checking in a polite fashionl

"That's me," she said with raised brow, looking him over. He totally looked more like a Dave than other people around here did, at least. "Hi, Dave. Welcome to Fandom. Trip go okay?"

His essential Daveness was such that if he walked around without a nametag, people would still probably peg him as a Dave.

But he was still wearing the nametag. Otherwise, how could people be sure? "There were a couple speedbumps, but I got here on time and in one piece. I think that counts for something," Dave said.

"Around here, it kinda does," she said, smiling slightly. "Where're you from, Dave?"

He seemed all normal, too. Poor kid.

He was just going to write that off as teasing the new kid for the moment. Actually, he was probably going to write a lot of things off as that today. "Wisconsin. So that was a fun early-morning flight. But I'm sure other people had worse."

Ramona winced, very slightly. "Well, not everyone's coming from Wisconsin, so I think you win the who-had-it-worse contest," she assured him. "But that's the right attitude, I guess. What grade're you gonna be this year?"

"Sophomore. I figured, why get too used to one high school before moving halfway across the country to go to another?" Dave said. "I just hope I don't make a habit of it."

"It'll give you a solid amount of time to settle in here, too," Ramona said with a slight smile. "You're gonna need it. Did you find your roommate yet?"

"No, not yet. I think that's the next thing on my to do list," Dave said. "And after that, find some coffee. Actually, that probably should have been the first thing I did."

"The coffee isn't bad," Ramona offered. "Any questions for me so far? You see anything weird that needs explaining?"

Because she had that bingo card in her back pocket to freak him out with, still, so she needed to check.

"Well, there is one thing that I've been wondering," Dave said. He gestured out toward the distance and asked,"Does Maryland really look like that?"

"Nope," she said, shaking her head with a sigh. Because really, that was a good question. "You aren't in Maryland, Dave. You're not even in the U.S. Sorry. The island kinda...moves around, I guess. We're in Iceland, I think. Somewhere cold, anyway."

"You're messing with me, right?" Dave asked after a moment, giving a smile that suggested that he was in on the joke somehow. Sure, moving island. That made sense.

"Kinda wish I was," she admitted, a little regretful. "Sorry, Dave from Wisconsin. The place is really weird. If I were gonna haze you, I'd pick something more believable. And the moving island thing's just the tip of the iceberg."

"Really?" Dave asked. "Okay, I'll bite. How else is it weird?"

"Glad you asked, Dave. Here, I made a game out of it," Ramona said pleasantly, pulling out the paper (http://oi52.tinypic.com/3442hjd.jpg) she'd constructed to show him. "Here are the things that have either happened to me, or I've heard about happening to other people since I've been here."

She paused, and added, "By the way, I'm not crazy, and I know you're gonna think I am until something weird happens to you, but you know, it'd be convenient if you believed me straight off the bat."

"I don't think you're crazy," Dave said, looking at the card. "Very detailed in your teasing, maybe, but not crazy."

"And maybe you have a thing about gremlins, too."

"Seriously, I'd find something way less weird to haze you with," she assured him. "Also, I haven't seen a gremlin, personally, but it's our school mascot. Get used to that."

"How did we end up as the gremlins?" Dave asked, ignoring the explanation that would be obvious if he just trusted the bingo card. "And I guess it couldn't hurt to hang onto this. Even if it is still kind of weird."

Also, he did enjoy bingo.

"I'll figure out a prize if you get five in a row," Ramona offered. "And we're the gremlins because they're native to the island, I guess. And they bite people."

"They eat people?" Dave asked, taking 'bite' to the next level with absolutely no prompting.

"I think they just bite you and make you hallucinate," she said with a slight frown. "Could be wrong, though."

Okay, now she was messing with him.

"You know, I'm almost starting to believe you, because I don't think anyone could come up with that so quickly," Dave noted.

"I'm creative, but also lazy," she assured him. "I wouldn't go to this much work to try and mess with a new kid. Especially not one from Wisconsin." She smiled lightly, and added, "That just seems too easy. No offense to your state."
