The Science of Psionics, Wednesday

"Today is your exam," Kerrigan said. They were seated in an ordinary classroom, with ordinary tables and chairs. At the front of the class she stood, looking strong and stoic and perfectly willing to wring a few necks if she had to. "You have the full period to finish it. If you finish early, stay seated until I tell you you can go."

No freebies, kids.

"If you attempt to cheat, I will know. If you attempt to cheat off someone, I will know. If you drift off, I will know, and in all of these cases, I will nail you to the side of the dorms in front of all of your peers."

Don't think she wouldn't. She'd done it twice just when she was human.

"Emma, hand out the exams. Class, sit down, write, and don't think too loud."

Well, you had your orders.

Learning how to shield, preferably. But that psionic dampener was fairly effective all on its own.

He kind of wanted to chill out by it some more, actually.

Being aware of your different layers makes being manipulated on a psionic level more difficult.

Ben explained shielding, adding in a detailed bit about how it was the first thing Force-adept children learned to do.

It never hurt to remind people of his galaxy's strengths, after all. The weaknesses he'd keep to himself.

The best defense against another telepath is a good offense and an understanding of your layers of consciousness, as an outside force has a harder time manipulating that which is aware.

Should that be inconvenient, excellent shielding, a knack for planting telepathic earworms, or simply not attracting their attention are all good safety precautions.

Because she was Cally and couldn't not babble about the Auronar, her first answer was Raise them in a society that promotes ethics and respect in the first place, but she did follow it up with a description of shielding and awareness of one's mental surroundings.

Scully grimaced, and wrote:

Being able to concentrate and have an ordered mind; one that doesn't allow a telepath to slip into an unplanned or unexpected 'corner'. Shielding can be taught, but is very difficult for those who have no way to gauge the effect of their thoughts.

Layers allow you some defense;
this part was medically interesting, and Scully had a brief flash to Triela's condition. Although this could be compromised for medical problems. However, most mid-level telepaths find it work to dig down past the initial 'front-line' thoughts, and keeping those in order can defend for a certain amount of time.

She thought of the Pusher, and added, A determined, powerful and unethical telepath can also be outsmarted, given enough time. Knowing someone else's thoughts doesn't necessarily mean you understand them.Emma.
