Charlie's desk is for once not covered in papers, but in foodstuff. There's a plate with pizza slices on, a plate with cookies shaped like bats, half moons and possibly cats and cups of cocoa. He stands by the desk and smacks the hands of any student who looks like they're attempting to snitch something.

"Today's message to you all - Broots is my new TA! He'll be taking attendance and such when I'm not here, as well as helping me out with projects."

Charlie places a pizza with twelve slices on to the desk in the middle. He smiles. "You all get one slice each, and then you get to tell me how much of it you've eaten, how much you've all eaten together and how much is left. In fractals. When you've done that, you may have a second slice and do it all again with the current numbers!"

The solution to last lessons' problem:

Two players bet on the total roll of two standard dice. Player A bets that a 12 will be rolled first. Player B bets that two consecutive 7s will be rolled first. The players keep rolling until one player wins. What is the probability that A will win?

Let p be the probability that player A wins. Consider the following mutually exclusive cases, which encompass all possibilities.
• If the first roll is a 12 (probability 1/36), A wins.
• If the first roll is neither a 7 nor a 12 (probability 29/36), A wins with probability p.
• If the first roll is a 7 and the second roll is a 12 (probability 1/6 · 1/36 = 1/216), A wins.
• If the first roll is a 7 and the second roll is neither a 7 nor a 12 (probability 1/6 · 29/36 = 29/216), A wins with probability p.
• If the first and second rolls are both 7 (probability 1/6 · 1/6 = 1/36), A cannot win.

Probability p is the weighted mean of these possibilities.

So p = 1/36 + (29/36)p + 1/216 + (29/216)p.

Therefore p = 7/13.

Today's problem:

A rhombus, ABCD, has sides of length 10. A circle with center A passes through C (the opposite vertex.) Likewise, a circle with center B passes through D. If the two circles are tangent to each other, what is the area of the rhombus?

When the students turn in their solution, Charlie gives them all a halloween cookie of their choice.

"Today you are going to study Computation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computation). Informally a computation is what an algorithm performs when transforming inputs into outputs (if it halts). For instance your computer is performing a computation whenever you run a program.

More formally a computation is a sequence of intermediate steps in the evaluation of an algorithm in some model of computation each step immediatly following from the previous according to the rules provided for the model of computation.

Charlie nodded and added the note to his files, and marking it down in his attendance logs.

Han signs the roster.

1/12 I am not sure how many people are in the class sir but I'll guess 6/12 reduced to 2/4 reduced to 1/2 for the first part...

so that would mean I have eaten 2/12 reduced to 1/6 for the second part, everyone obviously has eaten the entire pizza with nothing left over so 1, 1 whole pizza was eaten.

Kawalsky spent the entire class struggling with the problem. He should have known this, but his math was so rusty unless it was a practical problem that he had a really hard time trying to work out the answer.

He eventually submitted something at the end of the class, complete with all of ~~his scribbles~~ his working out on paper. Kawalsky took a cookie and nibbled on it, then left class thinking about who he could talk to about tutoring him in math.. quietly.

Maia takes another slice grinning.

Angelus signs in.

Angelus was thoroughly distracted. He started out attempting the problem, but often veered off into daydreaming or doodling ~~many pictures of which would not be suitable for those without permission from their parents, which was ironic since the woman in question was technically his mother~~

It takes Han a minute to think in 2d, but once he does, the equations he's been studying come back.

A=1/2 pq

p^2+q^2=4a^2

And all he has is a. It's a regular figure, he could assume that p =q. He does and comes up A=100.

He takes a large bat-shaped cookie, iced in chocolate and nibbles it on his way out.

Anders signs in, with only one cup of coffee today, but a cut and slightly swollen lower lip.

Anders is clearly distracted today, and spends the entire class scribbling aimlessly in the margins of his paper ~~and cutting the corners off so it's nice and octagonal~~. He's not entirely sure what he turns in by the end of the class, but it's probably way off base.

He wanders off eyeing a bat-shaped cookie and wondering if he can get Lee in the eye with it.

Faith signs in.

Faith stared at him, and then at the pizza. "You're a tease. How can I think about numbers when there's a perfectly good, non-cafeteria pizza right in front of me?" She thought for a moment. "I'd eat one, out of 12. And then, since you said that we get another piece, we ate half the pizza or less. And then my second piece would be one out of the six that might be left, and then we'd be done with the pizza. Maybe?"

"Good enough," Charlie grins. "Here, have a slice!"

"~~Yay, pizza!~~ Thanks," Faith says with a grin.
